Women's Tennis Falls 4-3 in Hard-Fought Semifinal Bout

A tightly contested match came down to the wire in a three-hour singles match, but the St. Lawrence University women's tennis team fell 4-3 to RPI in the Liberty League Championship Semifinals on Saturday evening at Cornell University.

No.3-seeded St. Lawrence saw their season end at 14-5, while No. 2 RPI improved to 11-6.

In doubles, the Saints and Engineers split the number two and three matches, with St. Lawrence picking up a win at three. Ellie Fritz and Yvette Karera teamed up to defeat Gauri Muliyil and Juliette Ceas 6-2. The doubles point came down to number one, where Angelica Aksdal-Jansen and Molly Jespersen defeated Nicole Ridenour and Anushka Kaiswal 6-4.

In singles, the Scarlet and Brown got wins at one and five to put them on the brink of a win. Aksdal-Jansen made quick work of Ridenour at one, winning 6-0, 6-1, while Ariane Karera defeated Ceas 6-4, 7-5 at five.

The match came to a level at 3-3 with the final match on court at two singles. In the three-hour marathon match, Jespersen took the lead with a 7-6 (7-5) win before dropping the next set 7-5. In the decisive set, it went to another tiebreak, where Jespersen took a 6-3 lead. Kayla Wheeler won the next five points to take the match for herself and the team.
