Will Lederman logged 319 yards on offense to lead the St. Lawrence University football team, as the Saints fell to St. John Fisher 28-23 after a second-half comeback run on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
Lederman led the Scarlet and Brown, passing 15-for-24 for 200 yards and two touchdowns, and running for 119 yards on 21 attempts and a touchdown. Both
Shea Goodwin, with two catches, and
Nicholas Huhtala with three, picked up 47 yards.
Colin Wanat and
Savino Morelli recorded eight tackles each, while
Brennan Twombly and
Pat Ryan each tallied six.
Ryan Surhoff recorded two sacks, while
Joseph Pickett logged one for the loss of eight. Ryan also recorded two pass breakups, while Morelli recorded a fumble return and Surhoff finished with an interception.
St. John Fisher was first to the scoreboard on the afternoon, as Camden Chance ran in an eight-yard touchdown. Dominik Greco's kick was good for the 7-0 lead.
The Cardinals doubled their lead with 28-yard touchdown run from Deante Hall and a kick from Greco early in the second quarter.
With 7:46 to play in the first half, Lederman connected with Huhtala for a 24-yard pass, and
Clayton Fogler's kick was good to put the Saints on the board.
Fisher quarterback Ryan Whitney logged his first passing touchdown, and Fogler picked up a 38-yard field goal to make the score 21-10 at the half.
Whitney opened the third quarter with a one-yard touchdown run, extending the Cardinals lead to 27-10, but the Saints rallied as Lederman launched his second touchdown pass, connecting with
Matt Ciesielski for 37 yards. Fogler's second kick made it 28-17 at the end of the third.
With 9:45 to play in the fourth quarter, Lederman capped a 26-yard drive with a three-yard run to bring the game back within a score. The Saints forced the Cardinals to punt for the third time. This time, a short punt put the Saints on the 37-yard line, as they looked to take a late lead with good field positioning.
Unfortunately, Fisher turned the Saints over on downs and regained control with just about five minutes to play to hold onto the win.
Whitney threw for 193 yards and touchdown, while Jackson Cusack caught six passes for 62 yards and Whitney, Hall and Camden Chance each ran in a touchdown.
St. John Fisher finished with a 26-17 advantage in first downs, while the Saints capitalized on six third-down conversions and finished with three sacks for the loss of 13 yards.
St. Lawrence moved to 1-1 on the season, while Fisher improved to 2-0.
The Saints return to Leckonby Stadium, as they host Alfred for their second Empire 8 crossover game of the season for the Steve Munn '64 game on Laurentian Weekend. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
