Tyler Cristall and
Rasmus Svartström each scored on the power play, but five unanswered goals the other way sent the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 7-2 loss against No. 16/17 Cornell on Saturday night in Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence fell to 2-15-1 on the season and 1-7-0 in ECAC play in the loss, while the Big Red improved to 7-4-0 and 6-2-0 in the league.
Armed with an early power play, Cornell seized momentum quickly in the contest and had the Saints on their heels. The pressure led to a Nick DeSantis goal at the 6:06 mark to give the Big Red the lead.
Play leveled off later in the first period, but the visitors doubled their lead as Tyler Catalano doubled the Cornell lead with less than three minutes left in the frame.
The Saints punched back in the second, tying the game in the first nine minutes.
St. Lawrence went on their first power play in the first five minutes of the period and went to work. After causing a Big Red turnover at the blueline, Svartström corralled the puck and dished a pass off to
Cooper Pierson entering the zone. The first-year left it off for Cristall, who hesitated, toe-dragged an outstretched defender, and burnt Remington Keopple to cut into the deficit.
Less than five minutes later, Svartström scored a goal of his own to tie the contest. Once again, on the man-advantage,
Cayden Casey was quarterbacking the power play and found Cristall on the wing. The senior ripped a pass into Svartström, who buried his eighth goal of the season to make it a 2-2 game.
The roller coaster contest continued as Cornell regained their lead on the power play at the 11:36 mark of the period.
St. Lawrence looked to have tied the game on their third power play goal of the night, when Pierson buried a loose puck, but a challenge for goaltender interference went in Cornell's favor, and the game stayed at 3-2.
Instead, Jonathan Castagna capitalized in the final three minutes of the second to complete the two-goal swing.
Cornell added three goals in the last period, including a power play goal on a double-minor to take the 7-2 lead and the eventual win.
Colin Winn made 26 saves for the Saints, while Keopple came up with 18 for the Big Red.
Both teams had two power play goals in the contest, with St. Lawrence going 2-for-5 and Cornell going 2-for-4.
St. Lawrence will be back on the ice next Friday, December 12, when the team hosts the USNTDP U-18 team in an exhibition contest at 6 p.m. that will conclude the 2025 portion of their schedule.
