Frankie Carogioiello and
Gabe Westling scored for the Saints, but goals in each period from the visitors sent the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 3-2 exhibition loss against the USNTDP U-18 team on Friday night in Appleton Arena.
The exhibition contest closed out the 2025 portion of the schedule for the Scarlet and Brown.
St. Lawrence took the lead less than five minutes into the game when Carogioiello put the Saints on the board. Filip Juříček had the puck for the Saints and found
Sam Frandina at the blue line. The first-year defender put a shot on net that was deflected in by Carogioiello to take the 1-0 lead.
The U.S. bounced back less than a minute later when Jamie Galnce tied the game at 4:53 of the first period.
Mason Kucenski played in goal during the first period, stopping 11 shots.
The road team took its first lead of the game at the 6:50 mark of the second period when Victor Plante found the net for the development team.
Colin Winn was in the net for the middle frame, stopping six shots in goal.
St. Lawrence tied the game up at the 7:23 mark with a play around the net. Frandina once again was a playmaker for the Scarlet and Brown, firing a shot at the U.S. net.
Gunnar Thoreson corralled the puck after and centered it into traffic. The big-bodied Westling bullied the defenders and buried the chance to knot the game at 2-2.
The visitors regained the lead minutes later when Glance caused a turnover and buried a shot to make it 3-2.
In the final moments, the Saints pulled
Cameron Smith and had a power play chance, but despite great chances, came up empty as the time ran out.
Smith finished off the game for the Saints in the third, stopping five shots. St. Lawrence's goalie stopped a combined 22 shots in the contest. Brady Knowling stopped 37 on the other end of the ice.
St. Lawrence outshot the USNTDP 39-25 in the contest, but went 0-for-5 on the power play, while their opponent went 1-for-6.
The Scarlet and Brown will have a break in their schedule for the holidays and will be back in action for the second half of their season on January 2-3, when the team hosts Stonehill at Appleton Arena in their final non-conference weekend of the year.
They will play the Skyhawks at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 2, and at 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 3.
