Hayden Summers and
Kiley Mastel scored to tie the game in the third, and
Kassidy Lawrence made a career-best 38 saves, but the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team fell to seventh-ranked Quinnipiac in overtime on Friday evening in Hamden, Conn.
Just 3:01 into the first, the Bobcats found the back of the net of the 1-0 lead, as Tessa Holk sent a quick pass to Kahlen Lamarche on the doorstep.
Mastel got the Saints' best opportunity of the first frame and St. Lawrence's lone shot as the Bobcats led 10-1 in shots on goal after one.
Mastel had another good opportunity to start the second on a rush with
Cheyenne Degeer, but was stopped by the glove of Felicia Frank.
Lamarche added her second goal, in very similar fashion to her first, giving Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead with 16:25 to play in the second period.
Lawrence made back-to-back leg saves to keep the Bobcats from finding a third goal in the waning seconds of the period.
After 40 minutes, Quinnipiac led 25-10 in shots on goal.
The third period sparked a comeback for the Saints. With 14:28 to play in the third, Summers scored her first collegiate goal. Off a Bobcats turnover,
Brooke Mulvihill circled the right side, sent a shot on Frank, but Summers was right there to collect the rebound and bring it back within one.
Three minutes later, Lawrence stonewalled Lamarche's hat trick chances with a breakaway save.
In a quick transition play,
Hanna Olson got the puck to
Mave O'Hagan in the center, O'Hagan dropped the pass back for Mastel, who rushed the net to tie the game 2-2 with 5:52 to play. Both O'Hagan and Olson recorded their first career points with the assists.Â
The two-goal rally from the Scarlet and Brown in the third to tie things up forced overtime for the fourth time this season.
A minute and 30 seconds into overtime, a turnover in the Saints' zone left Tessa Holk wide open on the right side. Holk beat the glove of Lawrence with a high shot for the overtime game winner.
"We gave it a real good go down here tonight," said head coach
Chris Wells. "We found a little bit more from our group with another great third period comeback vs. a real good team. We had a solid second and third to put us in that position tonight and Kass was on to allow us to get the game level at 2-2."
Lawrence made a career-best 38 saves, while Frank stopped 22 for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac finished with a 41-24 advantage in shots on goal. Shots were an even 13 apiece in the third.
The Saints moved to 5-7-1 on the season and 3-2-0 in ECAC play, while Quinnipiac improved to 12-1-0 and 4-1-0.
"That is a big point for a lot of reasons for our team," Wells added. "Much to build off and get a good rest for Princeton tomorrow."
St. Lawrence will travel to Princeton to take on the Tigers, tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
