Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Davis Scores; Nordström, Saints Shut Out Princeton

Graduate transfer Alexa Davis scored the lone goal and Emma-Sofie Nordström made 45 saves, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team shutout Princeton, 1-0 in Princeton, N.J. on Saturday afternoon.

Starting out strong, Mave O'Hagan rang a shot off the post looking to get the Saints on the board first with a solid chance at 9:18 of the first.

After the first 20 minutes, Princeton led 13-11 in shots on goal.

Just  into three minutes and 31 seconds into the second period, Ella Nancarrow flipped the puck out of the Saints' zone catching Davis on the breakaway. Davis went five hole to beat Uma Corniea for the 1-0 lead.

SLU held onto their 1-0 lead after 40 minutes and led 24-23 in shots on goal.

A back-and-forth battle through the third, Princeton applied heavy pressure looking to find the equalizer.

Nordström stopped a 2-on-1 breakaway with 4:06 to play in the third, and with 1:52 to play, Princeton pulled Corniea for the extra attacker, but were unsuccessful. Nordström remained steady through the final minutes, stopping 22 shots in the third period to preserve the shutout.

"A wonderful way to head home on this road trip," said head coach Chris Wells. "Our goalies have been excellent to say the least and Emma kept Princeton off the board to get us the win today in the third."

"We played with pace all game and had as many chances as we have had all year in a game. Princeton has many skilled players and made a huge push to tie it at the end. Emma with saves, our team blocking shots and getting sticks in lanes made a big difference."

Nordström finished with 45 saves, which is good for her season second best, and earned her second shutout of the season and 15th career shutout. Corniea finished with 30 saves for Princeton

With the win, St. Lawrence improved 6-7-1 overall and 4-2-0 in ECAC play, while Princeton fell to 4-4-0 and 4-2-0.

"A regulation win and an OT loss on this trip will go a long way in our league that looks to be as tight as it ever has been," Wells finished.

St. Lawrence will face a quick turnaround as they take on Clarkson in a non-conference school day game at Cheel Arena on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
