Mulvihill Scores, No. 12 Clarkson Wins School Day Matinee

Brooke Mulvihill scored a power play goal late in the second period, but the 12th-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights cruised to a 6-1 win over the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team during non-conference action at the school day game on Wednesday morning at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson got things rolling as Janelle Evans sent a pass in front of the crease to Manon le Scodan, who tipped the puck in at 4:24, making it 1-0. Then late in the first frame, Jenna Smellie scored on a wrap around chance increasing the Golden Knights lead to 2-0 after the first 20 minutes.

The teams traded power play goals late in the second period, as le Scodan scored her second of the game to make it 3-0 in favor of the Golden Knights and Mulvihill scored to put the Saints on the board with 2:54 to play.

An original shot from just outside the left circle from Kennedy Wilson was stopped by Clarkson's Holly Gruber, but a big leg rebound went right to the stick of Mulvihill, who cashed in to make it 3-1.

The Golden Knights ended the second period with a 4-1 lead after a goal from Sena Catterall.

Clarkson's Keira Hurry scored just 21 seconds into the third period and Catteral added her second of the game on the power play for the 6-1 final.

"Certainly not what we had hoped for," said head coach Chris Wells. "We had a lot of offensive chances and Holly made some great saves to keep us off the board. Clarkson played hard around the net and was rewarded with some early goals."

"I was happy with a lot of our effort and chances that we were creating. Point of execution was a little off sometimes and it wasn't for them. That along with the special teams was the difference in the score. We will take a good break this weekend and be ready to get back in some ECAC league play."

Kassidy Lawrence and Emma-Sofie Nordström split time between the pipes. Lawrence played the first half and made 10 saves, while Nordström finished the game with 13 saves. Gruber finished with 38 saves for Clarkson.

Despite the score, St. Lawrence still had plenty of opportunities winning the shot battle 59-50, including a 39-29 advantage in shots on goal.

"Another great school day event to play in this year. It has turned into a very nice tradition. Lots of work goes into this and both teams get to benefit from the atmosphere," Wells added.

St. Lawrence fell to 6-8-1, while Clarkson improved to 7-5-1.

The Saints are off this weekend and will return to ECAC play next weekend, as they host Yale and Brown, November 21-22.
