Senior captain
Kiley Mastel scored two goals, tying the game twice, but the 14th-ranked Yale Bulldogs edged the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team 3-2 in overtime on Friday night in Appleton Arena.
Yale was first to strike on the power play, as Gracie Gilskyson fed Carina DiAntonio in the slot. DiAntonio's shot went high to beat the blocker of Saints' goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström for the 1-0 lead.
Under two minutes later, Mastel scored her first of the night, as she intercepted a Bulldog's pass on the edge of the neutral zone, went on the breakaway and slipped one through the legs of Anna Phillips to tie things up 1-1.
With the score tied up after the first 20 minutes, St. Lawrence led 9-6 in shots on goal.
With 3:35 remaining in the second, Nordström stopped a 3-on-1 breakaway from the Bulldogs to keep the game knotted 1-1 and the Saints continued to lead the shots column, 20-17.
Yale took the lead for a second time with their second power play goal at 4:12 of the third. Molly Boyle swept around the defense and fired a shot from the right circle for the 2-1 advantage.
Mastel scored once again with her second of the night, tallying the first multi-goal game of her career, with a rocket from the top of the circle.
Taeyeon Kim carried the puck into the Yale zone, left a drop pass for
Hanna Olson, who found Mastel for the tying goal.
Mastel's goal forced overtime, the fifth extra frame of the season for the Saints.
In overtime, the Bulldogs rang a shot of the post and the Saints collected, but a turnover in the neutral zone gave the puck back to Yale, as Jordan Ray went on a breakaway with a low shot past Nordström's glove for the overtime win.
"Appleton has certainly seen a lot of overtime this year for our games," said head coach
Chris Wells. "In this league this year getting points has a premium. Getting another late goal in the third to tie it for at least a point is very important. We had a real good penalty kill to end the game vs. a Yale power play that was clicking tonight."
Nordström recorded 33 saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Phillips finished with 31 for the Bulldogs.
Yale finished with a 36-33 edge in shots on goal and went 2-for-3 on the power play.
"All in all another productive effort that we can grow on as we head into the last few games of the semester," Wells added. "Brown will be another tough test tomorrow at 3."
St. Lawrence fell to 6-9-1 overall and 4-3-0 in ECAC play, while Yale improved to 7-3-0 and 4-3-0.
The Saints will be back at Appleton Arena tomorrow afternoon, as they take on No. 12 Brown at 3 p.m.
