Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cristall Strikes Twice; Skating Saints Fall at Princeton in High-Scoring Affair

Senior Tyler Cristall scored two goals, and Cooper Pierson and Cayden Casey each had two assists on the day, but a third-period goal and two empty-netters late sent the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 7-4 loss on Friday night at the Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton, N.J.

St. Lawrence fell to 2-10-1 with the result and 1-4-0 in ECAC play, while the Tigers improved to 4-2-0 and 1-2-0 in league play.

The game was a rough-and-tumble contest that saw 59 penalty minutes between the two squads.

The Saints were afforded two power plays early in the contest, as Princeton was assessed two penalties within the first six minutes of play. Despite heavy pressure and six shot attempts on the Tiger goal, the Saints were unable to score, and the score remained 0-0.

Later in the first, Princeton ended up breaking the tie game with a Brendan Gorman tally to make it 1-0 at the intermission.

St. Lawrence took the lead in short order in the second period, scoring twice in the opening minute and fifty seconds.

The first goal came 13 seconds into the middle frame when Pierson found Rasmus Svartström, who centered the puck to Cristall. The senior wired a shot that pinballed off a defender and in to tie the contest. Moments later, Filip Juříček forced a turnover that ended up in the corner with Casey. The sophomore skipped a pass to Juříček, who one-timed the pass home to take the 2-1 lead.

Princeton scored at the 7:04 mark of the second to tie the game at 2-2. That didn't last long as the Saints scored on the power play at the midway point of the second period. Cristall was the benefactor of a great passing play from Isaac Tremblay and Sam Frandina and collected the puck at the top of the power play. The senior ripped a shot over the blocker of Conor Callaghan to take the 3-2 lead.

A five-minute major and a game misconduct against the Saints put St. Lawrence on their heels late in the period, and the Tigers took advantage, scoring on the power play with two seconds left to tie the game at the break.

The fireworks continued in the third with Princeton scoring in the first two minutes of the third. But St. Lawrence once again leveled the game on the power play. A passing play at the top of the unit came to Casey at the center of the blue line, where he fired a shot on goal that was deflected by Pierson before being tipped past the goaltender by Svartström to make it a 4-4 game.

The game moved along and looked as if it might go to overtime, but Princeton regained the lead in the final four minutes of the game when Jake Manfre found the back of the net. With the goalie pulled for the extra attacker, the Tigers scored two goals to put the game on ice.

Mason Kucenski stopped 24 shots in the St. Lawrence goal, while Callaghan stopped 15 shots in the home goal.

The Saints went 2-for-8 on the power play, while Princeton went 1-for-2.

St. Lawrence will be back in action tomorrow in Hamden, Conn., when the team takes on No. 9 Quinnipiac in a 7 p.m. match up.
