Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Special Teams Shine; No. 10 Saints Shut Out Mercyhurst for First Win

A pair of power-play goals from first-years Ella Nancarrow and Rylan Haslam and a shutout from Emma-Sofie Nordström gave the No. 10 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team its first win of the season as they defeated Mercyhurst, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in Erie, Pa.

Nancarrow got things rolling for the Saints, as she recorded her first career goal on the power play, going top corner to beat the glove of Magdalena Luggin with a shot from the point at 15:29.

Alexia Côté also found the back of the net with five minutes to play in the first, but the goal was called back on an offsides.

After the first 20 minutes, SLU led 1-0 and 12-5 in shots on goal.

St. Lawrence maintained their one-goal lead through the second period, thanks to 10 saves from Nordström, and after two periods the Saints held a 21-15 advantage in shots.

With 1:41 remaining in the third, the Saints were on the power play again, this time Tayeon Kim sent a beautiful cross ice pass to Haslam, who went top shelf with a one timer to make it 2-0. Kim and Reeves recorded their first career assists on the play.

Kennedy Wilson sealed the game for the Saints with an empty netter for the 3-0 final. Cheyenne Degeer, who assisted on Nancarrow's goal, picked up her first two assists in Scarlet and Brown, and Nancarrow logged her second point of the game with an assist on Wilson's goal.

"Big bounce back today from our team," said head coach Chris Wells. "They hit the gas right off the first puck drop. Our special teams were the difference. The penalty kill was outstanding all weekend, and we capitalized on the power play to get the win. Emma was solid and provided great comfort for us while we played with a one-goal lead."

Nordström recorded 24 saves for her first shutout of the season and the 15th of her career. Luggin also made 24 saves for the Lakers.

"The process is the process and part of that process is learning how to win and win. We earned this one and it's just what the team needed to keep moving forward. Ron Waske always said, "Winning is Fun!"

St. Lawrence also killed off all six of Mercyhurst's power play opportunities and finished with a 28-24 edge in shots on goal.

SLU improved to 1-3-0 on the season, while Mercyhurst moved to 3-3-0.

"We look forward to seeing everyone at Appleton next week for our home opener vs. Vermont, Wells concluded"

The Saints will host UVM for a two-game series next weekend, taking on the Catamounts at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 10 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 11.
