Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 12 Saints Battle to 1-1 Tie vs. UVM; Hehl Wins Shootout for SLU

Abby Hehl scored to give the No. 12 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team the lead in the third, but the UVM Catamounts scored with four seconds remaining to tie the game, as the team's skated to a 1-1 tie on Friday night at Appleton Arena.

Hehl scored a Sports Center worthy goal to win the shootout for the Saints, 1-0.

The Saints got off to a hot start from the jump, as Kassidy Lawrence made a fantastic save on a UVM breakaway, and the Saints outshot the Catamounts 8-3 in the first 20 minutes.

St. Lawrence continued to apply pressure in the second, but both teams remained scoreless after the second frame.

At 7:39 of the third, just 12 seconds into the power play, Alexia Côté and Brooke Mulvihill waited for the right opportunity, Mulvihill found Hehl in the shot and Hehl tipped the shot over the blocker of Ellie Simmons to give SLU a 1-0 and score the first goal at Appleton Arena this season.

Vermont spoiled the lead, as Makena Lloyd-Howe slipped a goal behind Lawrence from the goal line, with just four seconds remaining in the third to send the game to overtime.

The Saints had two breakaway opportunities in the extra five minutes, but the teams would skate to a 1-1 tie. Hehl won the shootout for the Saints, 1-0, with a between-the-legs trick shot.

"One of our more complete games out of the ones we have played," said head coach Chris Wells. "Each period we are getting more experience that will help us through October. Kass was excellent again when needed. Our special teams continue to be the difference in games where we have had success."

"Vermont is always a fun opponent to play and we gave the crowd a good show today especially in the third and the extra hockey," Wells added. "We can expect much of the same tomorrow from them. Hard, clean, and well coached."

Lawrence made 12 saves for the Saints, as Simmons stopped 33 for UVM.

The Saints outshot the Catamounts 34-13 and finished 1-for-2 on the power play, while Vermont went 0-for-1.

St. Lawrence moved to 1-3-1 with the tie, while the Catamounts moved to 0-2-1 on the season.

The two teams will meet back at Appleton Arena, tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
