Senior captain
Kiley Mastel scored to send the game to overtime, but the UVM Catamounts scored in the extra frame to claim a 2-1 win over the No. 12 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
Much like Friday evening's game between the Saints and the Catamounts, the first two periods on Saturday remained scoreless, with the Saints holding the advantage in shots on goal.
However, this time the Catamounts struck first on Saturday, as Lauren O'Hara's first shot was blocked, but Kaylee Lewis was able to slip one under the pads of Emma-Sofie Nordström through traffic to put UVM up 1-0, just 2:13 into the period.
With 2:07 left to play, the Saints pulled Nordström for the extra attacker and ultimately were successful.
With 48.5 seconds left to play in the third, Mastel lit the lamp with her first goal of the season. The Catamounts attempted to clear the zone, but
Brooke Mulvihill stripped the UVM defender of the puck and sent a centering pass to
Kennedy Wilson. Wilson's shot was stopped by Zoe Chiche, but the rebound was backed up by Mastel, who tied things up 1-1.
UVM claimed the win on a 2-on-1 breakaway in overtime, as Oona Havana beat the glove of Nordström for the 2-1 final.
"Each game before our league play will be a big learning experience," said head coach
Chris Wells. "Tonight was no different. UVM found another gear in the third and OT and was able to come out with the win. It was another clean, hard-paced game with them. Entertaining as well."
"Another fantastic crowd for us. We will be back in a couple weeks to play on Appleton again. In the meantime we will continue to add components to our game and work on areas that we are not so comfortable with yet."
"It always is a big boost to score 6-on-5 and we can carry that over to future games, as it looks like there will be plenty of close ones."
Nordström stopped 21 shots for the Saints, while Chiche made 25 for the Catamounts.
St. Lawrence finished with a 26-23 edge in shots on goal, while UVM went 1-for-1 on the power play.
SLU fell to 1-4-1 on the season, while UVM improved to 1-2-1.
The Saints will head back out on the road, as they travel to Rochester for a Thursday-Friday matchup with RIT next week. Both games are scheduled for 6 p.m.
