Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cristall Tallies Three Points in a 3-3 Tie Versus LSSU; Skating Saints Win the Shootout

The Saints got three special team's goals and three points from senior forward Tyler Cristall, but two extra-attacker goals from the visitors sent the game to overtime, where the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team had to settle for a 3-3 tie and a shootout win over Lake Superior State on Friday night in Appleton Arena.

St. Lawrence moved to 1-5-1 with the tie, while the Lakers saw their record go to 2-4-1.

Lake Superior State had the advantage through the first period of play and took the 1-0 lead at 14:09 when Connor Milburn beat Mason Kucenski on the short side post.

After coming up empty on their first power play of the day at the end of the first period, the Saints went on the penalty kill, where St. Lawrence tied up the game. Cristall caused a turnover in the defensive zone and sprung Gunnar Thoreson for a breakaway on the man down. The junior forward angled the goalie and scored to knot the game.

St. Lawrence went on the power play a few minutes later and was able to take the lead. After a defensive zone clear from the Lakers, Kucenski collected the puck and fired an outlet pass up to Cristall, who went in and beat Andrew Oke for the 2-1 lead.

The special teams play continued in the third, where the Saints had a power play early but were unable to double their lead.

Midway through the period, the Scarlet and Brown were whistled for back-to-back penalties, but came up big with the kill on the 5-on-3 to retain their lead.

With less than six minutes to go, the Saints eventually doubled their lead on the power play once again. While on the power play, Cristall controlled the puck and sent a pass over to Andrew Brown, who moved the puck quickly to Filip Juříček on the right wing. The first-year forward wired a one-timer over the shoulder of Oke to take the 3-1 lead.

Late in the third, the Lakers pulled their goalie for an extra-attacker and got two goals in the final three minutes to tie the game and sent it to overtime.

In the 3-on-3 overtime, Cristall, Thoreson, and captain Jan Olenginski all had chances but couldn't find a game-winner, while Kucenski made a pair of saves.

The game ended in a tie, but went to a shootout where the Saints got goals from Cayden Casey and Sam LeDrew, and three stops from Kucenski to take the win.

Both teams had 33 shots in the game, and Kucenski and Oke each made 30 saves sin their respective nets.

St. Lawrence had a great day on special teams, going 2-for-4 on the power play, and went 4-for-4 on the kill with a shorthanded goal.

The Skating Saints will be back at Appleton Arena tomorrow at 7 p.m. when the team hosts Michigan Tech.
