Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Haslam’s Multi-Point Game Leads Saints to Weekend Sweep

Back-to-back goals in the third period from first-year Rylan Haslam propelled the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Union on Saturday afternoon to complete the weekend sweep.

Union was first to strike, as Jill Willis followed up a Saints' rebound from the doorstep for the 1-0 lead. St. Lawrence responded quickly, exactly a minute later, as senior captain Kiley Mastel fired a wrister from the left circle to tie things up 1-1.

After the first 20 minutes with the score tied up, Union led 12-10 in shots on goal.

A defensive battle through most of the second, St. Lawrence's Emma-Sofie Nordström and Union's Emma Rheaume kept thing tied up at 1-1.

With 27.4 seconds left to play, Karianne Engelbert was able to capitalize on a leg rebound from Nordström to make it 2-1 after the power play.

Union led 2-1 after 40 minutes of play, while the Saints led 22-17 in shots on goal.

The Saints played aggressive on the power play early in the third, and nearly knotted the score once again, as Rylan Haslam hit the post, but her shot was cleared out by a Union defender.

Third time was the charm for Haslam, as Alexia Côté sent a cross-ice pass to Haslam on the goal line. She went top right corner to tie the game 2-2 with 7:15 to play in the third.

Haslam netted back-to-back goals for the win. With 1:01 to play in the third, Taeyeon Kim sent a shot from the point, her shot was stopped by Rheaume, but a diving shot from Haslam to collect the rebound put the Saints up 3-2.

"It took us a bit to get going again," said head coach Chris Wells. "Union had the better of the play early and scored a nice goal to get up 1-0. Kiley picked a good time to get her second of the year to get us back in the game. We started to make more plays and get pucks on net as the game went on. We had a power play late in the second that set us up for another in the third and we were able to connect."

"We found a little something today that will go a long way," Wells added. "We can gain a lot from coming back and getting the win."

Nordström recorded 19 saves for the Saints, while Rheaume made 41 for Union.

St. Lawrence went 1-for-4 on the power play and outshot the Garnet Chargers 44-21 recording 22 shots on goal in the third period to Union's four. Union went 1-for-3 on the power play.

"A special note to add - our game puck went to our longtime bus driver Rich Tudor, who will be bringing us home for the last time. All the best to him as he gets to spend more time with his family!"

With the win, SLU improves to 4-5-1 overall and 2-0-0 in ECAC play, while Union fell to 4-4-2 and 0-2-0.

The Saints will make their way back to Appleton Arena to host Dartmouth on October 31 and Harvard on November 1. Both games are scheduled for 3 p.m. starts.
