Twenty-eight points in the second quarter powered the Hobart Statesmen to a 49-17 win over the St. Lawrence University football team on Saturday afternoon in Geneva, N.Y.
Will Lederman passed for 118 yards on 15 completions and ran for 36 yards to lead the Saints offense, while
William Murray caught five passes for 45 yards.
Ryan Surhoff led the defense with seven tackles, a sack for the loss of 12 and two TFL's for the loss of 14 and a forced fumble.
Savino Morelli also logged seven tackles, while
Anthony Ferro,
Aidan Hays and
Shemmy Bridges recorded a TFL.
Clayton Fogler finished with one field goal, logged five kickoffs for 226 yards and went 2-for-2 on PATs.
The Saints were forced to punt on their opening drive, but they pinned Hobart down with a bad field position to start the Statesmen's first drive. On a 3
rd and 7, Surhoff forced a fumble, which was recovered in the end zone by Morelli for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
Hobart answered with a 65-yard drive, finished off by a one-yard run from E.J. Taylor to tie things up 7-7. The Statesmen went on to score three unanswered touchdowns, the second a 10-yard pass from Jeremy Weiss to Johnny Harding and the third a 29-yard run from Taylor. All three of Luke Monteyne's kicks were good for the 21-7 lead.
Weiss connected with Jordan Nolan for back-to-back touchdowns to end the first half, the first a 96-yard touchdown and the second a 40-yarder to build a 35-7 lead at the break. Â
Scoreless for the first part of the third quarter, Hobart attempted a 51-yard field goal, but the kick was low and was sent back with a 100-yard touchdown return by
Matt Ciesielski, making it 35-14 after Fogler's second kick was good.
The Statesmen tacked on another touchdown with 6:30 to play in the third, as Weiss found Harding for a 60-yard touchdown, increasing Hobart's lead to 42-14.
Fogler converted on his sixth field goal of the season, giving the Saints three points with a 38-yarder to start the fourth quarter.
Hobart finished things off with a one-yard rush from Tahj Jackson for the 49-17 final.
Weiss threw for 329 yards, going 13-for-17, while Taylor ran for 103 yards and Nolan finished with three catches for 154 yards. Jeron Atwater Jr. recorded a team-high eight tackles, while Billy Brosko finished with six and a sack for the loss of 10.
The Statesmen finished with a 24-15 advantage on first downs, picked up 544 total yards on offense to the Saints' 194 and went 5-for-11 on third-down conversions, while SLU went 4-for-12.
Both teams moved to 2-5 on the season and 1-3 in Liberty League play.
St. Lawrence will return to Leckonby Stadium when they host RPI on Saturday, November 1 at 1 p.m.
