Kucenski Stops 37 Shots; Skating Saints Drop 3-0 Game in South Bend

Junior goaltender Mason Kucenski made 37 saves on the night, but the St. Lawrence University Men's Hockey team fell 3-0 against Notre Dame on Friday night at Compton Family Ice Arena in South Bend, Indiana.

St. Lawrence fell to 1-5-0 on the season, while the Irish improved to 2-2-0.

The Saints came out firing in the first period to the tune of a 12-10 advantage in shots.

Cayden Casey, Cooper Pierson, Sam LeDrew, and Spencer Bell all had chances on Nicholas Kempf in the opening four minutes of play, but were stymied by the netminder.

St. Lawrence kept the pressure on, but Notre Dame ultimately opened the scoring with a power-play goal from Michael Mastrodomenico at 8:52 of the first period. The Saints and Kucenski withstood a late flurry in the period, but held Notre Dame at bay for the 1-0 score at intermission.

The Scarlet and Brown once again came out firing, tallying the first eight shot attempts in the middle frame.

The Irish instead doubled their lead when Paul Fischer capitalized on a chance at the 7:03 mark.

St. Lawrence nearly cut into the lead moments later when first-year defender Sam Frandina weaved through traffic and wired a wrist shot that beat Kempf and rang off the post, but instead the score was 2-0 at the break.

The Saints opened the third with an early penalty kill and, after successfully killing off the chance, earned a bid of their own. LeDrew highlighted the man-advantage, firing three shots, but couldn't find twine. Gabe Westling got in on the action, going between the legs on the doorstep, but the highlight chance was knocked down by a pad.

Evan Werner capped the scoring at 12:02 of the third, finishing a feed from Panayioti Fimis and Brown.

The Saints would pull the netminder in search of a goal but were once again stonewalled by Kempf and the Irish defense.

Kucenski finished with 37 saves, while Kempf stopped 26 in the shutout win.

The Saints return to action next weekend when the team hosts the University of Toronto in an exhibition matchup at Appleton Arena on Saturday, October 25 at 7 p.m.
