The Saints picked up six wins in their first match of the season as the No. 23 St. Lawrence University women's squash team defeated No. 29 William Smith College 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon in Geneva, N.Y.
St. Lawrence improved to 1-0, while the Herons fell to 0-6.
Early in the match, the score went to 2-2 with the Scarlet and Brown taking a pair of 3-0 wins, and the Herons securing tight 3-2 victories.
At number five, first-year
Mariam Dodd took on Kimberly Javier and secured her first career victory winning 11-6, 11-2, 11-3. Fellow first-year
Khissaiyia Spencer took on Teghan Torrey at number six and much like her teammate took a 3-0 win by the score of 11-1, 11-2, 11-3.
At number one,
Angel Otshabeng took on Reshika Rajarathinam and won the second and fourth games to make it 2-2 and force the final game. The Herons' number one took the 11-5 win to take the match.
Azaa Regmi had a nearly identical match at number eight where she won the second and fourth matches against Ashley Ambrosio. Like her teammate, she would fall in the fifth game 11-8.
It was all Scarlet and Brown from there as the Saints rattled off four straight wins.
Senior
Meg Pruett gave St. Lawrence the lead in the number two spot with an 11-0, 11-6, 11-4 over Brianna Lucero.
Laura Franz followed suit with a 3-0 win of her own in the number four spot taking on Tamia Rollaing by the score of 11-8, 11-5, 11-5.
The lead ballooned to 5-2 in the number seven spot where junior
Emma Kahle earned her first career win over Danie DeZart 11-2, 7-11, 11-4, 11-4 and secured the overall win for the Saints.
The Saints' final win came from
Madeleine Martin, who took on Scarlett Sandoval and walked away with the 11-7, 11-2, 11-3 win.
St. Lawrence will be back in action this weekend when the team takes on Brown on January 10, and Wesleyan on January 11.
