The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team saw two singles players reach their flight finals, while three singles and three doubles teams advanced to the semifinals to highlight day one of the Garnet Charger Invitational in Schenectady. N.Y. on Saturday.
In A singles, the Scarlet and Brown got two wins in the quarterfinals with
Broderick Pinto defeating Union's Arhan Gupta 6-1, 2-6, (11-9) and
Edvin Strandberg defeating Oneonta's Chris Chippari 6-3, 6-2. While Strandberg lost a tight 6-4, 0-6, (9-11) match to Union's Ian Schunk, Pinto advanced to the flight final with a win in the Semifinals. Pinto took on Drew's Jesse Faro and claimed a 7-5, 6-0 win to advance to tomorrow's final against Schunk at 9 a.m.
In the D draw,
Ryan Tingley impressed with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Oneonta's Braden Greenberg, while his fellow first-year
Armaan Walia defeated Drew's Josh Kline 6-4, 6-1. Walia saw his run end in the semifinals with a 5-7, 3-6 loss to Union's Jiahe Wang. Meanwhile, Tingley saw his run continue with a hard-fought 6-4, 1-6, (10-8) win over Union's Daniel Saxe. Tingley will take on Wang in the flight final tomorrow at 9 a.m.
In E singles, the Saints saw three players advance to the semifinals.
Sebastián Boada,
Sonny Mo, and
Charles Schepens advanced with 8-2, 8-1, and 8-3 wins respectively to advance to the semis.
In the A doubles bracket, the duos of Pinto and
Jake David, and Strandberg and
John Hill-Edgar each got first-round byes. Pinto and David took on Oneonta's Chris Chippari and William Schmid and won 8-6 to advance to the semis. Strandberg and Hill-Edgar made quick work on Oneonta's Jaden Ritterman and Peter Pitaleff winning 8-0 to also advance.
The Scarlet and Brown saw another tandem advance to the semis in bracket B. Boada and Mo also had a first-round bye in their bracket before taking on Drew's Ty Gelijns and Sergey Kravchenko. The St. Lawrence duo took the match 8-2 to advance.
Hill-Edgar (B singles) and David (C singles) each earned first-round wins in their respective brackets but saw their runs end in the next round.
St. Lawrence will continue with day two of the Garnet Charger Invitational tomorrow morning.
