Box Score The St. Lawrence Saints women's basketball team fell to Union 61-56 as they wrapped up their weekend road swing to the Hudson Valley Tuesday afternoon in Schenectady, N.Y..
The Saints, who defeated the Garnet Chargers 71-53 when they played at Burkman Gymnasium, went 0-2 on the weekend after losing Friday night in Ithaca. Their second consecutive loss puts the Scarlet and Brown at 11-12 on the season with a 9-7 league record. They still hold onto a one-game lead over Union (9-14,8-8) for fourth place in the Liberty League going into the final weekend of the regular season.
"We had a great opportunity today and just couldn't take advantage of it," said head coach
Dan Roiger after the game. "We physically competed but not mentally, we let Union play to their strengths and have a good offensive game. On offense we generated some good shots most of the time but it was a game where we didn't shoot well. Hard to overcome an opponent when you shoot that poorly."
The Saints started the game red-hot. At 2:44 of the first quarter, they had a 21-6 lead with seven offensive rebounds and 13 second-chance points. Union was forced to take a timeout after back-to-back three pointers by
Jackie Malley and
Margaret Dougher.
After the torrid start, the Saints struggled in the second quarter on both ends of the court. Union was able to come all the way back from down 15 to grab the lead at 33-32 with 1:51 left in the half. That lead would stick into the break, as the Scarlet and Brown trailed 35-34.
Norah Niesz had seven points at the half.
The second half was back and forth for action with many ties and lead changes. More see-saw action left the Saints trailing 56-57 with 53 seconds remaining after an elbow jumper by Niesz. On the following possession for the Garnet Chargers, they delivered, getting a wide-open layup, to put the lead back up to three. On the other end, a three-pointer by St. Lawrence didn't connect and Union got the rebound. Union was able to make their free throws and get the victory on their senior day.
Elizabeth Flynn had a double-double with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists to lead the Saints in all categories. Niesz was also in double figures with 11 points.
The Saints will head back home for their final two games before Liberty League playoffs as they take on Skidmore next Friday and RPI Saturday.
