Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Goals From Paul and Lasak Lift the Skating Saints to a 2-1 Win Over Brown

Goals in the second and third from senior captain Justin Paul and Jan Lasak along with huge saves from Ben Kraws lifted the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 2-1 win over Brown on Friday night in Appleton Arena.

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 6-12-3 on the year and 4-4-1 in ECAC play, while the Bears fell to 7-11-1 and 5-7-0 in league action.

The beginning of the game was paced by the Bears, who earned the first grade-A scoring chance of the night. The Bears' Tyler Kopff found himself with a breakaway just minutes into the game but was stymied by Kraws, who was on his game early.

No goals were scored in the first, but the Saints held the 9-6 edge in shots.

Kraws came up huge again in the second period when the Bears had a golden chance to break the scoring. Brown had the Saints hemmed in the defensive zone when they got a shot on goal that rebounded to an open Bear. Kraws robbed the backdoor effort to keep the score at 0-0.

The Scarlet and Brown would repay the effort with the first goal of the game. At the 17:33 mark of the second period, Felikss Gavars poked a puck up the boards to Mason Waite, who put the puck towards the net. Paul was in the right position as the captain tipped the puck past Lawton Zacher to put St. Lawrence on top.

It didn't take long in the third period for the Saints to double their lead getting the lead less than a minute into the final frame.

Gunnar Thoreson helped force a turnover on the boards that eventually came to Tucker McIntosh, who lofted a puck in the air and over the Bears' defense. On the receiving end of the pass was Lasak, who poked the puck through a defender's legs and fired a wrist shot under the arm of the goalie to extend the lead to 2-0.

The game would remain at 2-0 for most of the period until the final three minutes when Brown pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. The Bears would capitalize as Brett Bliss found Ethan Mistry, who got a shot on goal that was saved before the big-bodied Alex Pineau picked up the rebound and cut the lead in half.

Brown would keep their goalie out for the extra attacker, but Kraws and the St. Lawrence defense was up to the task turning the Bears away and securing the win.

Kraws finished with 25 saves in the win, while Lawton made 22 in the Bears' net.

Both teams would come up empty on the power play with the Saints going 0-for-4 and Brown going 0-for-2.

The Scarlet and Brown will be back in Appleton Arena tomorrow night when they host Yale in a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
