Balanced scoring and a game-winning goal from
Greg Lapointe in the third period lifted the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 4-2 win over Yale on Saturday night in Appleton Arena.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 7-12-3 on the year and moved above .500 in ECAC play at 5-4-1, while the Bulldogs fell to 7-12-0 and 5-8-0 in league play.
It was the Saints, who got to the scoreboard 11:59 into the first period.
Philippe Chapleau started the play by skipping a pass up the boards to senior captain
Justin Paul, who tipped the puck ahead to Tomáš Mazura, who got a shot off on Jack Stark. The rebound came back to Mazura, who got the puck and buried the puck on the open net to give the Saints the lead.
A few minutes later, St. Lawrence seemingly doubled up their lead when
Luc Salem knifed his way through the Bulldog defense and beat Stark through the five-hole. The goal was called back after a review that brought a five-minute major penalty on the Saints negating the goal.
The game would get tied up in the first six minutes of the second period by a Yale forward, but the Scarlet and Brown would waste little time responding.
Midway through the second, Salem would control the puck and fire a pass to
Jake Lammens, who found a wide-open
Reilly Moran. The senior took advantage of the busted coverage and space by rifling a shot through a screen and into the top shelf to regain the lead. The assist was the first for Lammens, who tallied his first career point in Scarlet and Brown.
The Bulldogs would score later in the period with a shot through traffic of their own making it a 2-2 game going into the third.
The tie game in the third lasted just 1:57 before Lapointe broke the deadlock. Lapointe, who has shown to have a knack for big-time goals, buried a rebound off a
Max Dorrington shot and centering feed to make it a 3-2 game.
The Skating Saints continued to hunt and found an insurance goal at the 15:44 mark of the third.
Drake Burgin sent a pass to his defensive partner Chapleau, who fired a shot on goal. The puck would come around to
Nicholas Trela, who wired a slapshot over the shoulder of the goaltender to help seal the win.
Ben Kraws and the St. Lawrence locked it down the rest of the way to claim the 4-2 win and weekend sweep.
Kraws finished with 17 saves in the win, while Stark stopped 25 of the 29 shots he faced.
Both teams came up empty on the man-advantage with St. Lawrence going 0-for-2 in 3:03 of power play time, while Yale went 0-for-3 despite having 8:03 of power play time.
The Skating Saints will immediately start their preparations for the Route 11 Rivalry next weekend. The team will head up the road to take on their rivals in a 7:00 p.m. showdown, before heading back to the friendly confines of Appleton Arena for the second installment of the rivalry.
