Chapleau Notches Power Play Goal in 4-1 Loss at Clarkson

Junior defenseman Philippe Chapleau opened the game with a power play goal, but three goals against in the second led to the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team falling 4-1 to Clarkson on Friday night in Cheel Arena.

St. Lawrence fell to 7-13-3 with the loss and 5-5-1 in the ECAC, while Clarkson improved to 13-9-1 and 7-3-1 in league play.

The first period was a fast-paced one that ended up scoreless despite great chances both ways. Armed with the first power play of the game, Felikss Gavars and the Saints pressured early but were unable to find twine. Moments later with 8:21 left in the period, Ben Kraws stopped a Clarkson breakaway teh other way to keep the score at 0-0.

Shortly into the second period, on another power play, the Saints broke the scoring on the man advantage. Tomáš Mazura carried the puck into the offensive zone and advanced it to Gavars, who carried the play deep before skipping a pass out to Chapleau at the blue line. The defender wired a shot past Brady Parker to give the Scarlet and Brown the 1-0 lead.



Later in the second, Clarkson would get their first power play of the game and tie up the contest at 1-1. The Saints would take a penalty before the goal however putting the Knights back on the man advantage which they used to take the 2-1 lead.

Clarkson would extend their lead to 3-1 moments and carried the lead into the third period.

St. Lawrence would get some good chances early in the third to cut into the deficit, especially early when Gunnar Thoreson intercepted a pass and went on a breakaway. The first-year got hooked by a Clarkson defender and had his shot saved on the no-call.

The Saints would pull Kraws for an extra skater in the final two minutes of the third but could not find a goal to chip away at the deficit.

Kraws made 20 saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Parker stopped 19 in the opposing goal.

Both teams would strike on the man advantage with St. Lawrence going 1-for-4, and the Knights going 2-for-3.

The two teams will be back at it tomorrow when the Route 11 Rivalry shifts to Appleton Arena at 7:00 p.m.
