First-year's Ariane and
Yvette Karera advanced to the Semifinals in doubles, while
Angelica Aksdal-Jansen and
Ariane Karera both advanced to the Round of 16 in singles to highlight the St. Lawrence University women's tennis team on the first day of the ITA Northeast Regionals on the campus of William Smith.
In doubles, the Karera's sisters opened their day with an 8-3 over NYU's Heber and Narayan for their first career ITA wins. In the Round of 16, the duo was tasked with the Herons' team of Levine and Haythorn. The Karera's took the 8-4 win to advance to the Semifinals tomorrow against the number one-seeded RPI tandem of Flores and Ridenour.
In singles, Ariane faced off against Pratt's Beatrice Crespo and cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win to advance. In the next round, the newcomer took on Sidmore's Katherine Almquist and went to a tiebreaker. After winning the opening set 6-3, Karera dropped the next 4-6, but stormed back with a 10-8 win to advance to the Round of 16 where she will face Vassar's Macey Dowd.
Also in singles play, Aksdal-Jansen would begin her run with a 6-4, 7-5 win over
Luisa Arizpe Sierra. In the next round she would take on NYU's Tess Heber and take the 6-4, 7-6(4) win. Aksdal-Jansen will play in the Round of 16 tomorrow against RPI's Lorna Flores.
Molly Jespersen earned a singles win in her first match against Vassar's Maddison Kirby 7-6(5), 6-4, but would fall in the next round to NYU's Dakota Fordham.
The Saints will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the ITA Northeast Regionals.
