The St. Lawrence University women's golf team will open up the fall portion of the 2023-24 season with the St. Lawrence Invitational under second-year head coach
Tyler Wollberg at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course this Saturday and Sunday.
At the SLU Invitational, the Saints are scheduled to compete against Ithaca, Union, Cortland, St. John Fisher, and SUNY Canton.
"I'm excited to get the fall season underway and we're hoping to continue the trend we had last spring," said Wollberg. "We have four of our top five returning and I'm excited to see what some new first years will add to the team. Last year we averaged 384 for team scores and I wouldn't be surprised if we see that number be near 350!"
"
Mary Grace McCann is a rising junior, is coming off a Second Team All-Liberty League season and I wouldn't be surprised to see her make that First-Team this spring," Wollberg added. "
Nora Wagner is coming off a great season where she shaved off 30 strokes off her average from 2022.
Abigail Sikora is coming off a great season with a career-low round of 86 in the first round of the Liberty League Championship.
Lane Haehl had a great first year playing on the team and I'm looking forward to watching her crush it this season.
Ellie Boeschenstein is a rising senior, who practiced last year but this year will be competing, and I wouldn't be surprised if she plays her way into the top five.
Ella Narins and
Riley McPhee are new first years joining the squad and I'm looking forward to watching them pushing this team to new heights. We start off the season at the SLU Invitational over Labor Day Weekend followed by weekends at Hamilton, Ithaca, SUNY Canton and Thousand Island Golf Club versus William Smith. It's going to be a great fall and I know the team is ready to get things rolling on Labor Day."
McCann, who earned Second-Team All-Liberty League and CSC Academic All-District honors during the 2022-23 season, tied for ninth at the Liberty League Championships, shooting an 80 during round one and a career-best 75 on day two of the tournament for a 155 on the weekend.
Three out of four Saints dropped strokes off their scores from round one last season, as Sikora placed 18
th, and Wagner finished 26th. Sikora also shot a personal best at the tournament with an 86.
Wagner and Boeschenstein return for their senior campaigns with the Saints, while
Cara Vredenburg, Sikora, McCann and Haehl make up the Scarlet and Brown's junior class. First-years Narins, McPhee, Krakhofer and
Annalee Card will also join the mix this season. Vredenburg and Card are both dual-sport athletes, who also play field hockey, so you won't see them on the greens until the spring portion of the schedule.
Following the Saints' home invitational, the Scarlet and Brown will play in the Hamilton College Invitational on September 9-10 and the Ithaca Invitational on September 16-17. St. Lawrence will also play a round against SUNY Canton on September 20, before wrapping up the fall portion of their schedules against William Smith at the Thousand Island Golf Club.
