Five different Saints tallied goals and four different skaters put up multi-point games as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team defeated Ferris State 5-2 on Friday night in Big Rapids, Michigan.
The Scarlet and Brown moved to 2-4-1 on the year with the victory, while the Bulldogs fell to 2-4-1. Â
"Our guys earned a really good road win in a tough place to play," said Charles W. Appleton II Head Men's Hockey Coach
Brent Brekke "Our discipline was much better and I liked the way we managed the game late to secure the win. Kraws played really well and had some big saves at important moments of the game. It was also a very special night for
Tommy Hill to come back as an alum of Ferris and have the team win for him!"
Senior captain
Justin Paul put up a team-high three points in the effort, while
Tomáš Mazura,
Felikss Gavars, and
Drake Burgin each had a goal and an assist in the game.
The Saints would strike first and took the early lead just 1:12 into the game. Paul would start the play getting a pass over to Gavars at the blueline. The sophomore sniper fired a low shot that was tipped in front by
Cameron Buhl to the far post and in to make it a 1-0 contest.
A few minutes after the goal, Ferris State would get a grade-A chance Anthony Venuto, the team' leading scorer.
Ben Kraws stood tall in the net making the huge save to keep the lead for St. Lawrence.
Not long after the save, the Scarlet and Brown offense would reward the effort with another goal. At the 7:25 mark of the first period,
Jan Lasak found Burgin at the point, who would skip a hard shot towards the goal. Mazura, who was crashing the net, was able to get a stick on the puck and redirect it past Noah Giesbrecht to extend the lead to 2-0 going into intermission.
Lasak, who assisted on the second goal, nearly scored a goal of his own in the second period when Mazura found the sophomore open in the slot. Lasak's effort was stoned by Giesbrecht keeping the Saints at bay.
The two-goal lead wouldn't last much longer as Paul would earn his second assist of the night. Less than halfway through the second, Paul found
Philippe Chapleau, who skipped a pass up to Gavars on the left wing. The forward raced into the offensive zone and ripped a shot through the five-hole of the goalie to take a 3-0 lead.
The offense was humming on all cylinders as
Ty Naaykens nearly joined the scoring. The junior forward found himself on a mini breakaway but was turned aside.
In the third, the Bulldogs would cut into the lead on the 4-on-4 with an unassisted tally from Venuto 3:09 into the frame.
The Scarlet and Brown wasted little time getting the goal back as they would take a 4-1 lead 33 seconds later.
Tyler Cristall would start the play dishing a pass off to
Mason Waite, who carried the puck in and would get a wraparound shot on goal. The attempt was stopped and the puck popped into the air where Pual would swat in the loose puck to regain the three-goal lead.
Exactly three minutes later the red-hot Saints attack would strike for the fifth time. Burgin, who already had an assist in the game, would take a pass from
Max Dorrington and fired a shot that was blocked in front. The defender followed up the play and would bury his next shot to make it 5-1 St. Lawrence.
Ferris State would score once more at the 11:30 mark but would not be able to get any closer.
The Bulldogs would have a 27-25 edge in shots in the contest, and both teams were unable to score on the power play with the Saints going 0-for-3 and Ferris going 0-for-1.
Kraws made 25 saves in the victory, while Giesbrecht would stop 20 shots in the opposing net.
The two teams will lace them up again tomorrow from Big Rapids, Michigan in a 6:07 p.m. start.
