Junior defender
Philippe Chapleau would score first in the contest, but an overtime game-winner from the Bulldogs sent the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 2-1 loss on Saturday night in Big Rapids, Michigan.
St. Lawrence fell to 2-5-1 with the loss, while Ferris State improved to 3-4-1.
It didn't take long for the Scarlet and Brown to get on the scoreboard in the game scoring in the first four minutes of action. The Saints'
Cameron Buhl was able to win an offensive zone draw over to
Justin Paul on the left wing. The captain lined a pass to Chapleau in the slot, who wired a wrist shot off the far post and in to claim the 1-0 lead.
Near the midway point of the period, the Bulldogs would respond with a goal of their own. Trevor Taulien was able to collect a pass from Stepan Pokorny and bury a puck into the Saints' net to tie up the contest.
Ben Kraws came up huge for St. Lawrence making two huge saves to keep the game at 1-1 as it went into the first intermission. Kraws' hot play spilled into the second period where he stood tall stopping a pair of Bulldog chances to keep the attack at bay.
The Scarlet and Brown would get a pair of great chances to break the tie, first from
Tyler Cristall, who found himself with space in the slot. Logan Stein was able to stop the effort and Cristall was barreled into the goal and the threat was frozen.
Moments later, both teams would once again threaten with a pair of odd-man rushes. Up first was St. Lawrence, who had a rush led by senior captain
Luc Salem. The defense took away the pass as Salem put a shot on goal that was turned aside. The play would then swing to Ferris, who had a 3-on-1 that was stoned by Kraws.
The transfer goalie, who finished the game with 33 saves, flashed the best save of the night in the first shift of the third period. A Ferris forward had the puck in dangerous territory and got a pass over to his teammate on the left post. Kraws made a split save to deny the effort and keep the game tied.
The Saints pressed in the third period in search of the goal but would come up with just iron.
Felikss Gavars, who has been red-hot for the Saints had a great look on the goal less than five minutes into the third but saw his shot ring off the post. Later in the period,
Mason Waite came streaking down the left side and let go a heavy shot that would find the crossbar.
The game would go to overtime where the Saints would possess the puck early. Waite and fellow Manitoban
Ty Naaykens both had looks on the Bulldog goal but could not find twine.
Ferris would end up with the win in the final 1:15 of the overtime period as a 2-on-1 ended with an Antonio Venuto goal and a Bulldog win.
Ferris State would have a 35-23 edge in shots in the game, and both teams came up empty going 0-for-1 on the power play each.
Kraws was solid in the Saints' net stopping 33 shots, while Stein made 22 saves in the Bulldogs' net.
The Skating Saints will be back in action next weekend when the team opens ECAC play at Appleton Arena against Union on Friday, November 10 and RPI on Saturday, November 11.
