The Saints were able to generate 31 shots but were unable to score as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 5-0 to Yale on Friday night in New Haven, Conn.
St. Lawrence fell to 3-7-1 and 1-2-0 in ECAC play with the loss, while the Bulldogs improved to 2-4-0 overall and in the league.
The early portion of the game was a bit of a feeling out process for both squads, who were able to get shots to goal but were unable to generate threatening chances.
A St. Lawrence penalty would put the Bulldogs on the man-advantage where they would gain momentum and eventually score. Moments after the power play, David Chen would find himself with space at the right circle and wire a shot home to take the lead.
The Saints would counter-punch and nearly tie up the game in the minutes following the goal. The best chance came on a 3-on-1 where
Tyler Cristall found
Ty Naaykens on the left side of goaltender Jack Stark. Naaykens brought the puck to his backhand but was stick checked before he was able to capitalize on the open goal.
Instead, the Bulldogs would claim a 2-0 lead before the end of the period as Ian Carpentier finished off a cross ice pass to extend the lead going into the second.
The Scarlet and Brown came out firing in the second period and dominated possession. After a dominant first four minutes, the Saints would go on their first power play of the period. Despite a few great chances, including a great look from Tomáš Mazura at the right circle, the man-advantage would come and go.
St. Lawrence would get another power play shortly after and would continue their attack. Towards the end of the effort, senior captain
Luc Salem rung a shot off the crossbar, keeping the Saints at bay. Yale wouldn't get their first shot of the period until the 10:17 mark of the period.
A third power play chance would come up empty as Stark successfully held the Yale lead. As the period dwindled down, Cristall would have two great looks off passes from Mazura but he was unable to find twine.
The Saints would continue their attack on the Yale goal in the third period but continued to come up empty-handed.
Reilly Moran and
Jan Lasak had three of the better chances in the period but were held off the scoresheet by Stark.
Less than five minutes into the third, Briggs Gammill would extend the lead to three before a Niklas Allain goal less than four minutes later made it a 4-0 game.
Late in the third, a Yale penalty and an empty-net led to a 6-on-4 chance for the Saints. The chance would end up in an empty-net short-handed goal from Rhys Bentham to put the game away.
Ben Kraws made 19 saves in goal for St. Lawrence, while Stark made 31 in the Bulldog net. Neither team was able to capitalize on the power play with the Saints going 0-for-5 and the Bulldogs going 0-for-2.
The Skating Saints will be back in action tomorrow night when the team takes on Brown at the Meehan Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. Â
