Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cristall Strikes on the Power Play; Men's Hockey Falls 2-1 at Brown

Sophomore forward Tyler Cristall was able to bring the Saints within one with a third period power play goal, but it was not enough as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 2-1 to Brown University on Saturday night in the Meehan Auditorium.

St. Lawrence fell to 3-8-1 with the loss, and 1-3-0 in ECAC play, while the Bears improved to 3-5-0 and 2-5-0 in league play.

For the second night in a row, the Saints came out at the start of the game with good pace as they outshot Brown 3-0 in the opening two minutes with Jan Lasak, Anthony Mollica, and Drake Burgin all testing Lawton Zacher early.

Unfortunately, the momentum would quickly shift with an early power play for the Bears. Just 16 seconds into the man-advantage chaos in front of Ben Kraws and the Saints' net led to the puck falling onto the stick of Ryan St. Louis on the doorstep, who buried the shot to take the lead.

Late in the first, Cameron Buhl had the best chance of the period for the Scarlet and Brown, but instead of an equalizer, Brown was able to extend their lead. Wyatt Schlaht was able to find open space with less than seven seconds left to give his team the 2-0 lead at the break.

In the second period, the Bears were afforded their third man-advantage, but the best effort came from the stick of Felikss Gavars, who rung a shot off the cage of Lawler.

Shortly after, a great shift from the Saints' second line led to their first power play of the night. Cristall was able to get a shot past Zacher on the power play, but his shot hit the post. With the ice tilting a bit for the Saints, Phillipe Chapleau had another great look, but his shot sailed wide.

Kraws was able to make some big saves in the ensuing minutes to keep the game at 2-0 before the Scarlet and Brown would head to the power play for the second time. Luc Salem found space on the two-minute advantage and wired a one-timer that narrowly missed the mark.

The third Saints' power play coming in the third period allowed St. Lawrence to break onto the scoresheet. On the man-advantage, Chapleau was able to collect the puck at the blueline and skip a pass down to Mason Waite. Waite put a shot on goal from the right circle that was redirected in by Cristall to cut the deficit in half.

The penalty parade continued for Brown giving St. Lawrence two more chances in the third. Will Arquiett had the best chance during the span, but Zacher was up to the task.

The Saints were giving a penalty in the dying minutes of the contest, but it turned into a grade-A chance as Salem was sprung for a breakaway as he left the penalty box. The defender rifled a shot to the upper part of the net but clipped the shoulder of the goaltender.

The Saints would pull Kraws for an extra skater but were unable to find the coveted equalizer.

Kraws finished the game with 25 saves in the St. Lawrence net, while Lawton stopped 30 of the 31, he faced.

St. Lawrence finished the contest with the 31-27 edge in shots on goal over the Bears. Both teams were able to cash in on the power play with the Saints going 1-for-5 and the Bears going 1-for-4.

The Scarlet and Brown will dip their toes back into non-conference play next weekend when the team heads to Kalamazoo next weekend to take on Western Michigan in their final two road games of the 2023 calendar year.
