Game Recap: Softball |

Saints Top Utica, Fall to Wisconsin Lutheran

The St. Lawrence University softball team split their games on the fourth day of The Spring Games outside of Orlando, Florida.

The Saints gave up two first inning runs to Wisconsin Lutheran which they could not overcome, but in game two Gabby Slater pitched the complete game for the win, and Cora Ferguson went three for three with RBIs as St. Lawrence beat their upstate New York rivals.

St. Lawrence, 1, Wisconsin Lutheran 5

The Warriors got on the board first. In the first inning with runners on the corners, a ball hit hard to second base scored one, and put the other on third. Wisconsin Lutheran scored again on a double steal.

In the bottom of the first the Saints had a pair of runners in scoring position, but could not get them across the plate.

At the top of the fourth inning, it was the Warriors with runners on second and third with no outs, but pitcher Jacee Casebolt got one batter to fly out, recorded a backwards K, and got the assist on the final out to get out of the predicament.

The Saints finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. Meredith Rose was hit by a pitch, and Margo Hopper singled through the left side to get two runners on. Kayla Minst pinch hit in the cleanup spot, and grounded out to second, which advanced the runners. Ferguson was up next, and also grounded out to second, which scored Rose, to get one run back. That was as close as they would get.

Wisconsin Lutheran would score three in the seventh, and was able to retire the Saints in just three pitches to secure the game 5-1. Casebolt pitched for six innings, and faced three batters in the seventh, and Sophia Berryhill was brought in to pitch the final three outs.

Utica 3, St. Lawrence 4

It was the Saints who struck first in the second game of the day. With runners on first and second, Ferguson singled up the middle, to bring home Meredith Rose.

Ferguson extended the lead in the fifth with a single to right center that scored Vivian Johnson and moved pinch runner Emily Harvey to third. Harvey would score on an error by the first basemen to go up 3-0.

Utica got two back in the bottom of the third, but in the top of the fourth made it a two run game again. Stella VanGee reached on a bunt and stole second. A single by Rose got VanGee to third, and she scored on a passed ball to make it 4-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Slater struck out her third batter of the game, and fielded a grounded to record her fifth assist of the game to be one out away from the complete game win. The next batter doubled to left, and was brought home off of a single up the middle. She advanced to second on the throw home, and a wild pitch put the tying run on third. Slater was able to end the game by getting the batter to ground out to Johnson playing shortstop.

Head coach Rosie Phillips
'A few mistakes mixed with a lack of discipline in the box and timely execution cost us the first game, but we were able to attack early and stay consistent against Utica. Our pitchers had a good day in the circle, but sometimes all it takes is one or two mistakes to give a game away. Tomorrow will be solid competition for both games, so we need the focus that we had in game two to carry us into tomorrow if we want to be successful."
