Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Fall to Union on Senior Day, Advance to League Tournament as Third Seed

The St. Lawrence women's basketball team fell to Union 54-42 on Saturday afternoon in Burkman Gymnasium in the last game of the regular season.

After jumping out to a 13-9 first quarter lead, the Saints struggled from the floor in the second quarter. They shot just two of 16 to score just four points in the quarter, their lowest of the year. Despite this poor shooting, they trailed at the break just 19-17.

The Saints never retook the lead in the second half. Dylan Watkiss hit a 3-pointer, and Olivia Barringer made a three point play the old fashioned way on consecutive possession to tie the game, but Union answered with a seven point run.

In the fourth quarter the Saints shot just four of 13, while Union hit eight of their 14 shots, and the Dutchwomen extended their lead to win by a dozen.

"Union deserved to win that game today," said head coach Dan Roiger, "they simply played better than us. We could not overcome our amount of turnovers and our poor shooting, and that was mainly due to the Union defense. We are excited about our playoff game on Tuesday and look forward to getting back to playing good basketball."

Katie Frederick had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Olivia Barringer added nine points.

The Saints had 19 turnovers, while Union turned the ball over just 11 times.

Megan Lee and Olivia Pachla each had 14 points for the Dutchwomen, and Amber Raisner had 11.

Prior to today's game, the Saints honored the six members of the Class of 2022 – Gunnhildur Atladottir, Katie Frederick, Erin Kumler, Ava McCann, Hannah Schwoebel, and Dylan Watkiss.

"Congratulations to our seniors," Roiger continued. "They have gone through a lot together from their first season all the way to now. They were thrown in the fire their first year due to four injuries, and used that year as an experience to teach them the necessary skills to play college basketball. They went on to have a super sophomore year, missed their junior year due to COVID, and then had a 20-win season this year. It was an outstanding four years and I'm very happy to have been part of their growth."
