Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Win Overtime Thriller, Advance to Semifinals

The St. Lawrence women's basketball team advanced to the Liberty League Semifinals with a 64-60 overtime win over Skidmore on Tuesday night in Burkman Gymnasium.

The Thoroughbreds hit a layup with nine seconds to play to put Skidmore up 56-54, but on the next possession Katie Frederick dribbled in from the elbow and hit a floater to send the game to extra time.

After three scoreless minutes in overtime, Frederick hit another layup to put the Saints up 58-56. A minute later, Skidmore tied the game with a pair of free throws. On the next trip down the court, Dylan Watkiss hit a step-back 3-pointer to put the Saints up 61-58 with under a minute to play. The Thoroughbreds brought it back to one with another pair of free throws. St. Lawrence turned the ball over to give Skidmore a chance to take the lead, but the Saints made the defensive stop. Olivia Barringer hit the first free throw, but missed the second. Frederick came down with her 10th rebound of the game and iced the game with a pair of free throws.

"Not a pretty win tonight, but in a tournament format we will take it," said head coach Dan Roiger. "Our weaknesses were really exposed tonight and we were fortunate to make a couple of critical offensive plays to keep it close and get the game to overtime. We played excellent defense in O.T. but gave them many chances with missed rebounds and poor passes. But we move on and get another game to play on Saturday."

Frederick finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Her only offensive rebound of the night came on the missed free throw as time dwindled down in overtime. Ava McCann also had 13, including three from deep. Barringer and Olivia Middleton each scored 11, and Barringer came down with nine boards. Watkiss finished with nine points and five rebounds, and Cam Roberts had eight rebounds and five points off of the bench.

Cassie Davidson led the Thoroughbreds with 19 points, and Kate McCarney had 16. Julia Blanck had a team-high 11 rebounds to go with her eight points off of the bench.

The Saints shot 34.8-percent from the floor, and 42.9-percent from deep. Skidmore hit 29-percent of their field goals and were just 20-percent from beyond the arc.

St. Lawrence finished with 55 rebounds to Skidmore's 45.
