The St. Lawrence women's basketball team did not let up a field goal until midway through the second quarter, and defeated Skidmore 76-45 on Friday night in Burkman Gymnasium.
The Saints outscored Skidmore 25-2 in the opening quarter, giving up just a pair of free throws. In the second quarter the Thoroughbreds was able to get their offense going a bit more, but the Saints offense did not slow down, and the scarlet and brown went into halftime leading 50-21.
The 29-point lead at the break was too much for Skidmore to come back from, and never got it to closer than 25. The Saints in fact extended their lead to 42 after an
Ava McCann 3-pointer a few minutes into the final quarter.
"This group of seniors have always responded to being critiqued in their careers," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "They've gotten a lot of playing time and grown tremendously in part because they take heart of the tough lessons and work to get better. This week we focused on competing both physically and mentally, and we exploded out of the gates tonight. We played excellent defense, both individually and as a team, went strong to the basket, and played excellent team offense with great passes. Now our challenge is to not make this a one game phenomenon, but to make it the way the Saints play."
Katie Frederick had a 16 point, 11 rebound double-double, including seven offensive rebounds.
Ava McCann also had 16 points including a trio of 3-pointers.
Dylan Watkiss had five points and five assists to go along with her career high nine rebounds.
Kate McCarney had 11 points to lead the Skidmore offense. Julia Blanck had eight points and 11 rebounds.
The Saints held their opponents to just 20-percent shooting from the field, while they connected on 37.8-percent.
Both teams hit their free throws, St. Lawrence made 15 of 17, and Skidmore made 15 of 16.
