The St. Lawrence women's basketball team bounced back from their first loss of the season with a decisive 66-52 win against RPI on Saturday afternoon, led by
Katie Frederick's 22 point, 18 rebound double-double, and
Ava McCann's 19 points.
Leading 13-12 early in the second quarter, Frederick scored four straight, and
Olivia Middleton followed with five straight of her own to give the Saints a 10-point lead. St. Lawrence would extend the lead to as many as 14 in the quarter, but went into the half up 37-27.
McCann opened the second half scoring with a 3-pointer. RPI junior Ashlyn O'Neil scored the first nine point for the Engineers, and the team was able to cut the lead to seven. After a few minutes of trading baskets, McCann closed the quarter with a five point run to send the Saints into the final ten minutes up 55-42.
The Engineers could never get it to closer than 11 in the final ten minutes, and the final score read 66-52.
"A good bounce back game for us today," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "We struggled to shoot the ball from the perimeter, but ran good offense. We had good looks but couldn't get it in consistently all game. However, I thought the team did a great job of feeding our interior and we got a great fame from
Katie Frederick. We got some good contributions from
Cam Roberts, and
Sierra Sanson as well in the post. Our defense was solid all day, they had a couple of players step up and make some shots, and we still held them to 52 points, that's a pretty good effort. And we really controlled the boards, we knew they were a good offensive rebounding team, and we held them to 6, a season best for us against an opponent."
Frederick made 10-of-14 from the field and the Saints finished with 38.2-percent field goal percentage. RPI shot 33.3-percent from the field.
O'Neil finished with 15 to lead the Engineers, along with seven rebounds. NiCole DaPra shot 3-for-4 from deep and added 11 points off the bench.
The Saints finished with 51 rebounds, which is their season average. In addition to Frederick's 18,
Cam Roberts grabbed a career high eight. RPI came down with 32 boards, a dozen below their average.
