The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team held Clarkson to just four second quarter points and completed the regular season sweep with a 54-36 victory on Tuesday night in Potsdam, N.Y.
11 Saints got in the scoring column, and senior
Dylan Watkiss led the way with 13 points coming from a trio of 3-pointers.
Ava McCann also connected on three shots from deep to score nine points.
Watkiss had two of her 3-pointers in the opening three minutes as the Saints scored the opening 11 points. The Golden Knights cut the lead to six a few minutes later, but McCann had her second 3-pointer of the quarter to send St. Lawrence into the first break up 19-10.
The Saints locked down on defense and only allowed four points in the second quarter, the fewest they have allowed all season. At halftime, St. Lawrence led 31-14.
St. Lawrence used an early run in the third quarter to extend their lead to 24. In the final period of play the Knights were able to whittle it down to an 18-point game, but that was as close as they would get.
"Our goal coming into the game was to increase our defensive intensity and I thought we did that tonight," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "We had some excellent individual defensive performances and in most of the first 33 minutes we had five players defending well possession after possession. They were also making good adjustments on offense and finding open players. It's nice to coach a team that wants to get better and takes seriously the challenges you put in front of them."
Lauryn Withrow scored 11 for the Golden Knights, and Cassidy Dumont had 10.
The Saints shot 36.5-percent from the field, which is below their season average of 41.9-percent, but held Clarkson to shooting 25-percent.
The Saints grabbed 53 rebounds and gave up just 33.
Nicole Jeffrey came down with a career-high eight.
