Hein Homers, but Saints Fall to RPI

Skylar Hein was 2-for-2 with a home run and a double in the second game of the day, but the St. Lawrence University softball team was swept by Rensselaer 7-0 and 21-2 in a Liberty League doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Saints Softball Field.

Catherine Worthington went 5-for-6 with a grand slam, a triple and five RBI to lead the Engineers, who had 34 hits, including 16 for extra bases on the day.

The Saints fell to 5-20 overall and 5-17 in Liberty League play, while RPI improved to 6-4, 5-3.

St. Lawrence will wrap up the 2021 season with a home-and-home series with Union, traveling to Schenectady for a pair of games on Saturday before closing the year with two games at home on Sunday.

Game 1: Rensselaer 7, St. Lawrence 0

Maddie Provencher was 3-for-4, and Worthington was 2-for-3 to lead the Engineers in the opener. Steph Cavallaro and Erin Askins hit RBI doubles, and Liz Vizzini added a two-run single.

Alexis Cooke threw a three-hit complete-game shutout for RPI, strikeout out seven and walking three.

Hein, Zola Braswell and Lauryn Best had hits for the Saints.

Game 2: Rensselaer 21, St. Lawrence 2 (5 innings)

Hein's two-run home run came in the third inning, but the Saints were already training 14-0 after RPI scored two runs in the first, eight in the second and four in the third. The Engineers put the game away with seven more runs in the fourth inning.

Worthington was 3-for-3 with a grand slam and a triple to lead RPI at the plate. Allie Hunt was 4-for-5 with two doubles and a triple and three RBI, and Veronica DeStefano was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple and three RBI. Erin Askins was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple and three RBI.

Lyndaker, Meredith Rose, Margo Hopper, Tori Rotundo and Kayla Minst had hits to go along with Hein's 2-for-2 performance.
