Hutchinson Brothers Lead No. 7 Saints Past Plattsburgh

First-year Ben Hutchinson scored a season-high three goals, while his brother, junior Stew Hutchinson added two to lead a balanced attack and the No. 7 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 21-5 non-conference win over Plattsburgh State on Tuesday night.

Jack Hennessey and John Mahoney also tallied two goals apiece for the Saints, while Mark Mahoney recorded a goal and four assists and Peter Koch added a goal and two assists. Ben Murtagh, Alex Mapstone and Zadoc White all recorded a goal and an assist, while seven other members of the Saints' squad got in on the scoring action.

John Mahoney, Hayes Huwiler, Owen O'Brien, Cody Sipher and Whit Knight all notched their first collegiate goals for St. Lawrence in tonight's win.

Jackson Lalonde went 13-for-17 at the faceoff dot and picked up a team-best seven ground balls, while Brendan Brigham went 8-for-11 and picked up six. Hennessey and Hayes Huwiler both caused three turnovers.

Patrick Abad got the Saints on the board with his first of the season and the Saints built an 8-0 over Plattsburgh, before the Cardinals scored their first of the game with 1:11 remaining in the first quarter with a man-up tally.

Knight opened the scoring in the second quarter for the Saints off the pass from Mapstone. St. Lawrence extended its lead to double-digits (11-1) off Hennessey's seventh goal of the season and with three more goals from Mark Mahoney, Stew Hutchinson and Hennessey the Saints outscored the Cardinals 6-1 in the second frame and held a 14-2 lead at halftime.

Sipher scored his first goal and Ben Hutchinson added his fourth of the game for the Saints' two goals in the third quarter.

John Mahoney and O'Brien pushed the Saints lead to 17-3, before Amos Grimm scored his first of the game for the Cardinals. Huwiler recorded a man-down tally before Grimm scored his second of the game with 6:27 to play. Just 15 seconds after John Mahoney's second goal of the game at 4:25, Brett Williams scored one handed to make it 21-5 with just over four minutes to play.

"I thought we got off to a great start and played some good team lacrosse throughout the game," said head coach Mike Mahoney '93, P '22, '24. "It was nice to see contributions up and down the line up. We jump right back into conference action this weekend so we will need to have a great three days of preparation."

Stephen Kane led the Cardinals with three goals, while Grimm scored twice and Justin Rocovich picked up a team-best three ground balls and caused one turnover.

Elliot LaGorce picked up his first collegiate win in goal for the Saints with seven saves, while Christian Bassi made 19 saves for the Cardinals before being relieved by Kyle Dodge, who made three saves.

The Saints outshot the Cardinals 67-16, including 43-12 in shots on goal. The Scarlet and Brown also picked up 55 ground balls to the Cardinals 25.

With the win, St. Lawrence improved to 4-0 on the season, while Plattsburgh fell to 1-3.

The Saints will switch back to Liberty League play and are scheduled to travel to Union to face the Dutchmen at  3 p.m. on Saturday, April 10.
