William Helm made a career-high 17 saves, but the seventh-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team fell to No. 15 Union, 10-6, in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon in Schenectady, New York.
Chris Jordan and
Jack Hennessey also scored for the Scarlet and Brown, while
Patrick Abad,
Stew Hutchinson and
Judge Murphy each recorded an assist.
Joe Scarfi picked up a team-best four ground balls, while Mahoney,
Brendan Brigham and
Guthrie Little each recorded three and
Tripp Clark caused three turnovers for the Saints.
Union struck first, as Peter Burnes scored on the rebound at 10:04. Keaton McCann scored back-to-back goals to put Union up 3-0 with 6:48 to play in the first. With less than six seconds to play, off a Union turnover, Scarfi picked up the ground ball and Mahoney scored his 12th goal of the season to put the Saints on the board with one second remaining in the first quarter and bring the game within two.
Hennessey opened scoring in the second quarter with an unassisted tally for his ninth goal of the season and Koch tied the game 3-3 at 9:52.
The Dutchmen scored three straight goals to take a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Union outscored the Saints 3-0 in the third quarter, taking a 9-3 lead heading into the final frame.
Koch scored his second of the game off the pass from Hutchinson on a man-up run and Mahoney also scored his second to help close the Saints gap to four with 7:17 to play in the fourth quarter.
McCann scored his fourth of the game to put Union up 10-5 and Murphy assisted Jordan, who scored one more man-up tally for the Saints with 1:01 remaining, but the clock expired on a 10-6 win for the Dutchmen.

Mike Mahoney '93, P '22, '24. "I thought it was a real physical game with two teams that competed hard. Their push late in the second quarter after we had settled into the game carried into the third and that was difficult to overcome. There was a lot that we can learn from this game and that will be important moving forward."
McCann led the Dutchmen with four goals, three ground balls and one caused turnover, while Peter Kip scored twice and added an assist. Burnes tallied one goal and two assists, while Dan Donahue picked up five ground balls and Ryan Puglisi caused three turnovers.
Saints' goalkeeper
William Helm made a career-high 17 saves, while Donahue made 15 for Union.
St. Lawrence capitalized of 2-of-3 man-up opportunities and the Saints' defense kept Union at bay, going 0-for-4 on the man-up. The Dutchmen finished with a 42-35 edge in shots.
The Saints fell to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference play, while the Dutchmen improved to 2-0 and 1-0, respectively.
The Saints are scheduled to travel to RIT on Saturday, April 17 to face the Tigers at 2 p.m.
