Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fourth-Quarter Surge Powers Saints Past Clarkson

The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team combined for 21 points in the fourth quarter, including 13 from first-year Abby Doin, to post a 53-46 win over Clarkson in non-league action on Tuesday evening at Burkman Gymnasium.

Doin finished with a team-best 17 points, while Kristen Varin added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Saints. Katie Chisholm added seven points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Sierra Sanson finished with six points, eight rebounds and three steals. Cam Roberts recorded three blocks for the Scarlet and Brown.

St. Lawrence posted an early 13-10 lead over the Golden Knights after the first quarter and the Saints ended the second quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 23-17 lead at halftime.

The Golden Knights outscored the Saints 21-9 in the third quarter to lead 38-32 heading into the final frame.

But it was the fourth quarter that made the difference for St. Lawrence.

Four-straight shots, including three 3-pointers from Doin, tied the game and lifted the Saints to a 47-43 lead over the Golden Knights with just under four minutes to play. The Saints finished off the game with a 6-2 run and outscored Clarkson 21-8 in the fourth.

"It wasn't a beautiful offensive performance," said head coach Dan Roiger. "But we finally made some perimeter shots in the fourth quarter and played excellent defense down the stretch. We actually played great defense in every quarter but the third, and that kept us in the game until we were able to put some buckets in. Also a real nice performance on the boards, and it was a team effort with five of our players having seven or more."

"I'm just really impressed with this group of young women," Roiger added. "We are down our top scorer going into the game, and then lose another during the game, finish with six players and somehow find a way to pull it out.  They are exhausted right now with all the minutes they played, but they dug deep as young players and got it done."

Hannah Earl led Clarkson with 20 points and seven rebounds, shooting 7-for-18 from the floor, while Molly Stewart and Lauren Bell each recorded six points and six rebounds.

St. Lawrence improved to 2-4 overall, while Clarkson fell to 6-4.

The Saints will host the Golden Knights in game seven of their series this season on Friday, March 19 at 4 p.m.
