Shannon Rhone,
Cam Roberts and
Abby Doin all recorded double digits to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to a 59-50 win over Clarkson in game seven of their non-league series on Friday afternoon at Burkman Gymasium.
Rhone shot 4-for-5 from 3-point range and scored 18 points for the Saints, while Roberts shot 5-for-9 from the floor for 12 points and Doin added 10.
Hannah Chaffer recorded a team-best 10 rebounds, while
Sierra Sanson added six rebounds and grabbed six steals for the Scarlet and Brown.
After a slow start, the Saints took a 12-9 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
The Golden Knights regrouped in the second quarter and closed with back-to-back 3-pointers from Hannah Earl to outscore the Saints 19-6 and take a 28-18 lead at halftime.
Much like Tuesday, it was the second half that made all the difference for the Saints. St. Lawrence outscored Clarkson 41-22 in the second half, 23-14 in the third and 18-8 in the fourth.
Roberts tied the game 34-34 with 4:03 to play in the third, but Clarkson still held a slight lead heading into the final quarter. A jumper from Doin to open the fourth gave the Saints a one-point advantage that they were able to build on for the win.
"This group is so impressive and resilient," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "Today we are down two players, two of our top three scorers, and somehow find a way to dig in and play an excellent second half. We played a very poor second quarter. We got tired, had only one sub the whole game, and it showed. We ran no offense, which led to poor shots and turnovers, and we didn't match up in transition defense or stop tendencies."
"The second half saw us play through the exhaustion and play fundamental basketball. We ran good offense and it led to good shots. We were aggressive, made good decisions, and also played excellent defense on the other end. It was a complete turnaround from the first half."
Earl led the Golden Knights with 19 points, shooting 7-for-15 from the floor, while Emma Buonanno recorded eight rebounds and Rachel Marion tallied six steals.
The Saints improved to 3-4 on the season, while Clarkson fell to 6-5.
St. Lawrence is scheduled to host SUNY Canton on Thursday, March 25 at 7 p.m.
