Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Doin Scores 17, Saints Top Roos 65-51

Abby Doin scored a career-best 17 points and Cam Roberts posted her first collegiate double-double to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to a 65-51 win over SUNY Canton on Thursday night at Burkman Gymnasium.

Doin finished with a team-best 17 points, while Roberts recorded 14 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks for the Scarlet and Brown. Shannon Rhone rounded out the top-three scorers with 10 points, while Doin and Hannah Chaffer both grabbed two steals.

The Saints jumped out to an early 14-9 lead after the first ten minutes of play and extended their lead to double-digits (35-23) on a layup from Chaffer to close the half.

St. Lawrence maintained it's advantage through the third quarter, ending with its largest lead of 19 points on a 9-2 run and back-to-back plays from Olivia Middleton and Doin.

SUNY Canton rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Saints 16-11, but were unable to overcome the early deficit.

"We actually played very well today but shot the ball poorly, and that made our overall performance look a little slack," said head coach Dan Roiger. "We kept our turnovers to a minimum and got lots of good shots, but the first and fourth quarters where we were 9/39 left us empty when trying to build our lead. I like that we had 17 assists on our 24 baskets, I thought we moved the ball really well and fed open teammates for good looks but didn't knock as many down as we normally do."

"I like the progress we are making as a team," Roiger added. "Abby Doin continues to play excellent defense and is finding her rhythm on her shot, Cam Roberts is figuring out her role offensively and is being more assertive, while also becoming a presence in the lane on defense and the glass. Everyone is growing and is improving as they gain experience, and this short nine game season will provide them excellent insight into what they need to do to improve. We said at the beginning of the season that we can measure success by the progress we make, and with one game to go, I like what I see."

Chelsey Raven and Joie Culkin both posted double-doubles for the Roos. Raven finished with a team-best 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Culkin finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Shanelle Borth also grabbed 10 rebounds for SUNY Canton, while Samantha Dayter recorded two blocks and two steals.

St. Lawrence recorded 27 points off turnovers, while the Roos finished with 12 second-chance points.

The Saints improved to 4-4 on the season, while SUNY Canton fell to 0-3.

St. Lawrence will play its final game of the season against SUNY Canton at the Roos House, tomorrow evening at 6 p.m.
