RPI's Delano Munoz Whatts scored on a rush in the first overtime and then ran in the two-point conversion in the second extra period to lift the 23rd-ranked Engineers to a 22-20 double-overtime victory over the St. Lawrence University football team on senior day Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.
First-year quarterback
Daniel Lawther was 22-for-40 passing for 184 yards and rushed for 64 yards with one touchdown, while
Peyton Schmitt rushed for 67 yards on 19 attempts and also added a touchdown for the Saints. Schmitt and
Andrew Murphy each recorded 48 receiving yards, while
Daniel Greene finished with five catches for 40 yards and one touchdown.
Once again, the Saints' defensive unit was on point.
Caleb Null led the defense with eight tackles, 1.5 tackles for the loss and 1.5 sacks for seven yards.
Reece Gillette and
Jacob Dreisbach both record seven tackles and one tackle for the loss.
Ryan Reinke posted a team-best 2.5 sacks, while the Saints combined for nine sacks on the day.
Lawther put the Saints on the board first with a 13-yard run at the 11:23 mark of the first quarter.
Ian Doin's first kick of the day was good for the 7-0 lead.
RPI's Dylan Burnett made a nine-yard run in the second frame and Conor MacDougall's kick was good to knot the game 7-7.
The Saints attempted a 36-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining in regulation to seal the win, but were unsuccessful. After the coin toss, RPI had the first possession of overtime. Munoz Whatts had four carries, including a 15-yarder on a fourth-and-one play, followed by a one-yard push into the end zone. MacDougall added the extra point for a 14-7 lead. Lawther connected with Greene for the three-yard pass for the tie game.
The Saints held possession to start the second overtime. Schmitt went the distance on the first play for a 20-7 lead. St. Lawrence attempted a pass on the two-point conversion attempt and were left emptied handed. RPI regained possession and Munoz Whatts rushed for eight yards on the first play and George Marinopoulos found Vinnie McDonald in the left corner of the end zone to tie the score. A push by the offensive line enabled Munoz Whatts to get across the goal line and end the game.
Munoz Whatts finished with 64 rushing yards on 15 attempts, while Burnett had 23 yards on four carries. McDonald caught four passes for 94 yards from quarterback George Marinopoulos, who completed 14-of-30 passes for 188 yards. On defense, Cam Younginer had a team-best 12 tackles and Nate Sicard added 10 with five unassisted, including a five-yard sack.
The Saints finished with a 21-13 first-down advantage, converted on five-of-13 third down conversions, and the Saints' defense held the Engineers to just 39 rushing yards.
St. Lawrence fell to 4-5 on the season and 1-4 in Liberty League action, while RPI improved to 8-1 and 4-1, respectively.
Prior to the start of today's game, the Scarlet and Brown honored the 28 members of the Saints' Class of 2022.
The Saints will wrap up the 2021 season on the road, facing off against Buffalo State on Saturday, November 13. Kick off against the Bengals is scheduled for noon.
