Prior to St. Lawrence

Schmitt played football at Gouverneur, where he set the Section 10 single-game rushing record with 433 yards. He was a two-time All-State selection and captained the team as a senior. He was also a two-time All-State selection in basketball Harrisville, helping his team win a Class D state championship and earning New York State's Class D Player of the Year honors as a senior. He was a three-year captain on the basketball team and also competed in outdoor track. Schmitt was also successful in the classroom; he was a member of the National Honor Society, was a high honor roll student and was named an athlete of distinction.
