Dylan Watkiss scored a career high 29 points and eight 3-pointers, as the St. Lawrence women's basketball team topped the Hamilton Continentals 72-68 in an overtime thriller in Williamstown, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.Â
The Saints trailed by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, as it looked like the Continentals would hand St. Lawrence their first loss of the season.
In the fourth quarter, Watkiss hit four 3-pointers and
Stella Davis added a pair from deep to aid the late come back. With just over two minutes to play,
Abby Doin banked in a three late in the shot clock to put the Saints up 60-59. The Continentals got to the free throw line and sunk both to retake the lead with 90 seconds to play. Hamilton got back to the line and hit another to extend the lead to two.
With 30 seconds to play, Watkiss found
Katie Frederick on the block who was immediately double teamed, but worked through traffic to hit a reverse layup and tie the game.
The Saints forced an awkward floater on the other end and came down with the rebound. They called a timeout to set up a final play with five seconds left in regulation. The Saints came out and got the ball to the hot-handed Watkiss, but Hamilton's pressure forced an off balance three that fell short.
The Saints shot 56-percent from the field in the second half, and 64-percent from deep in the fourth quarter.
Watkiss started the overtime with a long two, and Frederick followed that with another post move and layup. The teams traded a few jabs, and with three minutes to play the Saints led 68-67. Both teams came up with defensive stops, but Saints worked the clock well during their possessions.
After a Hamilton miss with less than 30 seconds left, the Continentals had to foul to stop the clock and try to get the ball back. This sent Watkiss to the line and hit one of two to put St. Lawrence up 69-67 with 14 seconds on the clock.
Hamilton's Kelcie Zarle came down and got to the line, but missed both. They came down with the offensive rebound, and Claire Sehring was sent back to the line with a chance to tie it. She hit the first, but missed the second, and Fredrick grabbed her 13th board of the day. She hit the first to go up 70-68, and missed the second.
Sierra Sanson came down with a scrappy offensive rebound, and Fredrick got sent back to the line. This time she hit both to extend it to a two possession game, and held on to win 72-68.
"A very exciting game for us to be involved in, these games are excellent experience," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "We showed a lot of grit and determination today, and even though it wasn't always going well, they kept fighting together. Hamilton had us on the ropes in the first half. They took away easy options and we went outside of our offense so we looked disjointed. When we had shots we didn't make them and just really struggled. We regrouped at halftime and stayed within our offense and started making extra passes and found teammates. Dylan got red hot from the arc and we cut into their lead extremely quickly. From there it was a slugfest the rest of the way, both teams answering each other blow for blow, what fun. Every possession was important. Loved the way the team responded. We are going to get punched again this season, and this game will be good experience for us on how to react.
Frederick had 10 points and 16 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
Zarle scored 29 points for Hamilton, and three other Continentals scored double figures. Hamilton was out-rebounded 48-34, but forced 18 St. Lawrence turnovers, and only committed six.
