Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Top Union, Improve to 6-0

Ava McCann scored a team-best 18 points, as the St. Lawrence women's basketball team beat Union 62-58 in their conference opener on Friday night in Schenectady, N.Y.

Katie Frederick added 14 points and 17 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, and Dylan Watkiss had 13 points, including two free-throws in the final seconds to ice the game, and snagged seven boards. Olivia Barringer had 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Saints trailed by two at the end of the first quarter, but went into the halftime break up 32-30.

A nine-point run midway through the third quarter gave the Dutchwomen a 44-39 lead. St. Lawrence answered with four straight, and some back-and-forth saw Union go into the final 10 minutes up 47-45.

It was a Saints' run that defined the fourth quarter. Three minutes into the quarter the Saints trailed 51-53, but over the next five minutes outscored Union 9-1. With 30 seconds to play, Amber Raisner scored a jumper to cut the lead to two, but the Saints held on for a 62-58 win.

"We didn't play well tonight and Union did a good job of getting our offense out of sync," said head coach Dan Roiger. "We made some big plays in the fourth quarter and were able to hang on through some scary final minutes. We have a lot to learn yet, and need to keep working hard to get better."

Raisner led all scorers with 23 points for Union. Nine different Dutchwomen contributed in the score column.

The Saints had 46 rebounds to Union's 41. The Saints outshot Union from the field, 39-percent to 36, and outshot them in the fourth quarter 46-percent to 28.
