Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Frederick Reaches 1,000 Points, Saints Top Thoroughbreds 73-62

Senior Katie Frederick scored 14 points and grabbed a season-high 22 rebounds to lead the St. Lawrence women's basketball team past Skidmore 73-62 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Frederick, who has lead the team in scoring every season since she has played, becomes the first Saint to hit quadruple career points since 2014.

"Congratulations to Katie on scoring her 1,000th point," said head coach Dan Roiger. "What a pleasure it's been to coach her, she just wants to win and help the team. She's not interested in personal accomplishments, but this is really special and a reflection of her skill, perseverance, and work ethic!"

Stella Davis had a season-high 19 points and five 3-pointers to lead the Saints, Dylan Watkiss had 14, and Ava McCann added 13 and a career-high six assists.

The first quarter got off to a slow start. A Skidmore layup 10 seconds into the game was the only scoring for the first six and a half minutes. Watkiss hit a free throw with less than two minutes to go in the quarter to finally put the Saints on the scoreboard, and the Saints would not hit a field goal until Frederick hit a layup with seven seconds left. The Thoroughbreds led 12-3 at the end of the first.

Skidmore extended their lead to double digits early in the second, but St. Lawrence picked up their offense and stayed in the game. They got the game to within two points and went into the halftime break down just 25-22.

A few minutes into the second half, Stella Davis hit a 3-pointer to give the Saints their first lead of the game at 32-30. Skidmore was quick to retake the lead, and went into the final quarter winning 50-49.

The Saints defense prevented the Thoroughbreds from scoring in the first four minutes of the last quarter. In that time Davis and McCann each scored five points and the Saints took a nine-point lead. Skidmore was not able to string together another run, and the Saints held on to win 73-62 to remain perfect on the season.

"Wow, what a great early season basketball game," said Roiger. Skidmore is good, we knew that coming in, and they had a great start against us. After getting down by 10, I thought we showed great composure. There was no panic in our game, we just took it possession by possession and slowly got back into the game. The second half our offense was outstanding, and we were much more assertive and made some great passes to teammates which led to easy shots. Other than a couple of minutes, our defense adjusted really well and made them take difficult shots. We really performed well in the fourth quarter."

Kate McCarney had 17 points to lead Skidmore, and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. Clare Driscoll had a baker's dozen, and Emilja Jakumaite contributed 11 points off of the bench.

After shooting just 1-12 in the first quarter, the Saints would shoot 55-percent the rest of the game, and shot 45-percent from beyond the arc. Skidmore shot 34-percent from the field and 25-percent from deep. The Saints out-rebounded the Thoroughbreds 49-31.
