The St. Lawrence University Overwatch team's first varsity season came to an end on Wednesday night, with the Saints falling to Johnson & Wales "Yellow" 3-0 in a round of 16 match in the ECAC Fall Overwatch tournament.
With the loss, the Saints finish the year with an 11-7 record. The team just missed qualifying for the National Association of Collegiate Esports Fall Overwatch Cup playoffs, finishing one spot shy of the tournament in group play, and won their first-round ECAC tournament match on Saturday.
"A good showing tonight here, and a bit of a bittersweet end to the season in ECACs for us, but we are super glad to have been able to get this far and make it to the playoffs," said Saints Overwatch coach
Kyle Jicha. "The team has put in a lot of work and it's been a fun ride."
The Wildcats made quick work of the first point, winning both rounds on the Lijiang Tower control point map 100-0.
The second point was held on the Dorado payloap map. St. Lawrence opened on offense and got caught at a chokepoint for most of the round before making a final push in overtime to nearly reach the first checkpoint. It looked like Johnson & Wales would win the point easily, as they escorted the payload to within four meters of the Saints performance in just over a minute, but St. Lawrence put up a valiant defense, holding the Wildcats off until there was just 1.5 seconds left on the clock.
The Saints once again struggled in the early stages of the third point, only to rally at the last minute, capturing the first point on the Hanamura assault map in overtime. St. Lawrence, however, was unable to get a tick on the second point, and Johnson & Wales was able quickly gain the second point to claim the 3-0 victory.
St. Lawrence's League of Legends team will compete in the spring semester.
