The St. Lawrence University Overwatch team fell to Old Dominion University by a 3-0 score in the team's final National Association of Collegiate Esports Overwatch Fall Cup match on Friday night.
With the loss, the Saints (9-6 overall, 6-4 NACE) finish in fifth place in the Group E standings. The top four teams in each group will advance to the postseason. The Monarchs clinched a spot in the postseason, moving into third place in the Group E standings with a 7-2 record.
"While tonight's outcome wasn't what we hoped for, we're more than satisfied knowing we put our all into this season," said Saints' Overwatch coach
Kyle Jicha. "To think we started from nothing only nine months ago and made it this far against so many established teams in NACE is incredibly inspiring. This is only the beginning for St. Lawrence esports. We're looking forward to continuing our team building, and excited for what the future holds."
ODU made quick work of the first two points, winning 100-0 and 100-8 on the Busan control map, then taking a 2-0 lead at Junkertown, holding the Saints to just 57.06 meters of progress on the payload map and then matching St. Lawrence's performance with nearly three minutes left on the clock.
The Saints didn't fold, however, fighting hard for the third point of the match and giving the Monarchs all they could handle. St. Lawrence started on offense and struggled a bit at the start of the round before making a big push to gain control of the point and unlock the payload with less than a minute left on the clock. While they didn't have much time, the Saints were able to push the payload 103.9 meters.
On defense, the Saints started out well, winning the first two engagements before the Monarchs were able to gain control of the point. ODU moved the payload quickly at first, but
Sam Putney, playing as Reinhardt, took out three opponents with one charge to earn Play of the Game honors. The Monarchs, however, were able to rebound and match the Saints progress with almost two minutes left on the clock.
While the Saints' NACE season is now over, the Overwatch team will continue play in the ECAC Fall Overwatch 2020 tournament with an opponent yet to be determined next Wednesday.
