The St. Lawrence University Overwatch team fell to Mount Saint Mary 3-0 in an ECAC match on Wednesday night.
The Mountaineers, playing against a Saints' lineup seeing its first action together this season, made quick work of the first point, claiming both rounds of the Lijiang Tower control point map 100-0.
The Saints' lineup started to gel on the second point, however, nearly reaching the third and final checkpoint on the Dorado escort map before Mount Saint Mary's all-out defensive strategy ran out the clock. The Mountaineers, however, took a 2-0 lead when they were able to match St. Lawrence's performance with 1:35 to spare.
St. Lawrence again opened on offense on the third point, capturing the first objective on the Hanamura assault map. But the Saints were unable to get a tick on the second point, and Mount Saint Mary put the match away by gaining control of the second point with more than four minutes remaining.
The Saints fell to 8-5 on the season and 3-2 in ECAC play with the loss.
"The team put in a respectable showing against a worthy opponent tonight, despite several changes to our usual roster and role assignments," said saints' Overwatch coach Kyle Jicha. "We're looking forward with to our next two matches with optimism as we finish out the NACE season this week."
Wednesday's match was the first of three in a row for St. Lawrence, which will close out the week with National Association of Collegiate Esports Overwatch Fall Cup matches against McMurray and Old Dominion on Thursday and Friday, respectively. The Saints are currently in fourth place in the Group E standings; the top four teams in each group will advance to the postseason tournament.
