The St. Lawrence University Overwatch team fell to undefeated Bryant and Stratton College 3-0 in a National Association of Collegiate Esports Overwatch Fall Cup match on Monday night.
The Saints played several competitive points against the Bobcats, who moved to 7-0 in group play. St. Lawrence fell to 6-4 overall, 4-3 in NACE group play.
"We knew that we'd have to step up and show our ability to punch above our weight class tonight, and I think we did just that," said Saints' Overwatch coach
Kyle Jicha. "We went toe-to-toe with the only undefeated team in our NACE group and put up one heck of a fight. As always, we will learn from this and use that knowledge to overcome our future opponents."
The first point was held on the Nepal control point map. In the first matchup, Bryant and Stratton took control of the point early and ran their meter up to 95%. The Saints were able to push the Bobcats off and get to 55% before the Bryant and Stratton responded to win the first contest. The Bobcats then shut the Saints out in the second engagement to claim a 1-0 lead.
St. Lawrence returned to Junkertown for a payload map challenge on the second point. The Saints opened on offense and were almost able to reach the third checkpoint, running out of time after pushing the payload 98.56 meters past the second checkpoint.
The Saints put up a hearty defensive effort, but Bryant and Stratton was able to match St. Lawrence's effort with 48 seconds left on the clock to take a 2-0 lead.
Jason Angelos (neonJason) earned Play of the Game honors for the Saints.
St. Lawrence once again was able to have some success on offense on the third point, held on the Eichenwalde hybrid map. After failing to capture the point in the first couple of engagements, the Saints were able to break through the Bobcat defense to control the point and unlock the payload, but didn't have enough time to advance to the second checkpoint. The Bobcats were able to match the Saints with more than four minutes left on the clock to clinch the victory.
St. Lawrence will face Wayne State "Black" in an ECAC match on Wednesday, then closes out the week against the University of North Texas in another NACE match on Thursday. Both matches are scheduled for an 8 p.m. start.
