The St. Lawrence University Overwatch team dominated Texas A&M San Antonio, defeating the Panthers 3-0 in just 35 minutes in a National Association of Collegiate Esports match on Thursday night.
Jason Angelos (neonJason) earned Play of the Game honors twice to lead the Saints.
The Saints improved to 2-1 overall with their second consecutive victory, and are now 1-1 in NACE play. Texas A&M San Antonio fell to 0-2 in league play.
"I'm super happy with the team's performance tonight," said Saints' Overwatch coach
Kyle Jicha. "They've been consistently improving their communication, coordination, and focus, allowing us to isolate and steamroll our opponents individually. We'll see how things go in our matches next week."
The Panthers had their best push in the match's opening moments, gaining control of the point on the Oasis control map and running their meter up to 56% in the first part of a best-of-three matchup for the first point. It was a back-and-forth affair, as the Saints got up to 99% before Texas A&M San Antonio pushed the Saints back off. The Panthers then threatened to claim victory, getting up to 95% before St. Lawrence was finally able to wrest control back once again and get over the finish line.
In the second part of the control map challenge, the Saints gained control early and never relented, taking a 1-0 lead with a 100-0 victory.
St. Lawrence built the lead to 2-0 on the Dorado payload map. Starting on defense, the Saints prevented the Panthers from even reaching the first checkpoint, then eclipsed their mark in less than a minute. Angelos won his first Play of the Game in the effort.
The Saints clinched the match on the Kings Row hybrid map. Once again starting on defense, the Saints nearly prevented Texas A&M San Antonio from even reaching the payload. The Panthers were only able to move the payload 89.67 meters before running out of time. St. Lawrence matched Texas A&M San Antonio with more than four minutes to spare. Angelos again earned Play of the Game honors for the Saints, marking the fourth time he has been recognized this week.
St. Lawrence will continue its NACE schedule next Monday against West Virginia University Institute of Technology.
